Good leadership, financial management, and governance are the essentials for success in any organisation, whether the organisation is a non-profit organisation or a for-profit organisation. Agencies and watchdogs have become even more visible seeking accountability and transparency. But how do leaders within the organisation work together to make it a success, how are they governed to achieve the goals of the organisation? In for-profit effective governance is easily recognisable, and achieved. The most important element in an organisation that operates for profit is its balance sheet, great sales and rising stock prices, profits being paid out as dividends, no mention of fraud in the company accounting, these are all excellent indicators of effective governance. In non-profits more so in healthcare, it is terribly difficult to measure or see effective governance. Also, the idea of optimum efficiency may have differing connotations for each stakeholder. Yet, the various organizations at Austin College sparked my interest, and slowly but surely I began to get involved. Although I have been overwhelmed at times, I quickly learned that being involved in the Sherman community and Austin College’s organizations have become a vital part of my college experience. My experience in these short 7 months have taught me the value of service and being involved. When I performed service events in the past, it was to gain service hours and build up a résumé. This past summer I was part of the leadership staff at Camp Howard. I was a unit director for the 1st and 2nd graders who came to camp for the day. This unit consisted of 30 campers and 4 counselors whom I was in charge of. I am also the treasurer of the College of Democrats and I volunteer with multiple organizations. As a youth group member, I was lucky enough to get the chance to go to New Orleans in the summer of 2011. During my stay, I was able to help others in a way that changed my life. When I was helping serve food, picking up trash, and helping to restore a church, I looked at children and families who were receiving that help. Their faces were priceless. The budgeting process for nonprofit organizations can be very interesting. Good nonprofit leaders ask for input before finalizing a nonprofit’s budget. One reason to ensure everyone has a voice in the budget process is because at the end of the day everyone will own the final budget. By owning I mean everyone will be held to the budget that is approved so it makes sense to get everyone involved in the process.
