One of the main problems the Vistas kept mentioning was the aspect of community awareness and engagement. In the article titled “Nonprofits and the Promotion of Civic Engagement: A Conceptual Framework for Understanding the "Civic Footprint" of Nonprofits within Local Communities”, the authors speak about how nonprofit organizations provide civic benefits by promoting engagement within local communities. Their analysis uncovered four primary categories which describe how non-profits support and promote civic engagement within communities, the first being “engaging with volunteers and donors”, as it offers an incentive for each to form an understanding of the organization and its impact, the second category is “bringing community members together…

Being active in National Charity League for six years, I have had the pleasure of working with many different philanthropies, my favorite being The Tualatin School House Pantry. Operating out of the basement of a church, the food bank helps to feed families in the community who are struggling financially. While my first few experiences at the food pantry were emotionally challenging, I found them to be very eye opening. I met many people from different backgrounds, yet they all shared the same hardship, the inability to afford food for themselves and their families. Wanting to do more for the recipients, I received training to be one of the personal shoppers.…

Throughout my life, I have dedicated myself to act selflessly and always attempt to best represent my community. The Larner COM commitment to service aligns with my philanthropic views of healthcare. In my experience volunteering at a local homeless clinic, we ask each patient: “If you could not have come here, where would you have gone?” Many patients’ answer is nowhere. The involvement that students maintain in the local Community Health Center of Burlington provides an opportunity to work with populations similar to those I have assist in Colorado.…

In continuing my work with programs involved in community outreach, such as Access Granted, I am looking to build a foundation of knowledge that will allow me to forge a career dedicated to changing the continuous cycle of apathy concerning communities of color. I want to aid in creating an environment in which a mentality of limitations is a foreign concept to those of us considered to be underprivileged. Ultimately, I want to construct a platform for community activism that assists in building relationships between existing service providers, community members, and government representatives. Without exposure to the experiences gained through my college education, none of this would be possible. Sure there are ways to influence change that extend beyond pursuing higher education, but in the words of Nelson Mandela: “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” I have only been in college for two years now, and in that short time the meaning of my education has grown to be profoundly personal. It is mine, and I no longer lack the courage to claim it or to be bold within…

Now, as I a paid staff member at a nonprofit, I realize that nonprofit work has a variety of benefits. Sororities are commonly known as a college social club or organization for women, with particular distinction given to the African American sororities. Brought about at the time in history when traditional roles of women were being challenged, the founders of the first black sororities had to overcome the stereotypical views of sexism as well. They were considered unique, although college wasn’t really an option for African American’s. Within society they were being treated in rejection because they were black. They wanted to have an organization that would be called sisterhood and ties into their community. Nine dedicated women wanted peace, sisterhood and wanted to become leaders amongst their communities so they formed the first African American sorority in 1908 called Alpha Kappa Alpha. With over a quarter of a millions members in the black sororities numbers are increasing over the years. They continue to be a part of their communities and educate youth in their community. When actual Greek letters were formed for sororities and fraternities white letter groups didn’t think black fraternity groups would be capable of understanding the meanings of the letters and Greek study as they did.…

Spelman College’s motto, A Choice to Change the World, mirrors my goal as a member of this intellectual community. During my first year at this institution, I dedicated myself to several hours of community service. I found that this was a vital part of my intellectual growth as both a student and person within society. This year I volunteered for several nonprofit organizations, however I dedicated most of my time to the Atlanta Community Food Bank. Before volunteering for this organization I was not quite sure how I would be able to make a significant difference in my community. However, when I volunteered for this organization, I was able to tremendously help people in Atlanta. Likewise, this experience opened my eyes to the increasing…

Many people engage in community service project because they are either forced as a punishment or sentence. Others engage in community service out of Spirit of unselfishness, or a desire to connect with their communities by helping out. For me, it brings a sense of completeness. During the past few semester my team members and I have engage in different projects, Collecting food, clothes and donating to the homeless. In a way I’ve experience working the different organizations and helping the community. But with this particular project, it meant much more then collecting for the disadvantaged, It was about lending a hand and your heart to a community in need.. During my involvement in this fieldwork project I got the opportunity to offer my unconditional assistance for one day in a non-profit making community based project. The name of the project was Liberty City Construction, which is being undertaken by a Christian ministry organization whose aim is to improve the livelihood of low-income families through building affordable and decent houses at a 0% interest rate.
