Dear Sir/Madam:

As you are already aware of, May 18th is the day that West Orange high school will be celebrating the prom. It is a joyous and grand time of year in which students can come together to have fun and celebrate their last memories together. During prom we encourage our students to remember that PROM IS A PRIVALAGE NOT A RIGHT. Failure to abide by the rules set forth by school policies will result in the termination of your prom night. Furthermore it is at the interest of each student to arrive promptly before 8pm.

In addition to prom, West Orange High School will be administering its annual after prom hosted at the Hyatt hotel in Morristown. Students are to provide their own transportation and are advised to dress appropriately and comfortably as school rules are still in effect. Note that student identification cards are required prior to entering the hotel and are to be carried with them throughout the duration of their stay. As discussed in the senior meeting, there is a zero tolerance policy for groundless behavior, drugs, alcohol, and other narcotics or illegal substances will result in the immediate ejection from the property and police action.

Student are restricted to the various entertainment areas allotted by the school and hotel staff. Be aware that students found outside of supervised areas, will promptly have parents/Guardians summoned with further possible disciplinary actions to be taken place during regular school hours

While the administration realizes that this is an event well deserved at a time well worth celebrating, the main concern of the school is the safety and well-being of

As an organisation of any visit it must be the safety of all participants, and in this, as in all other respects, both the DfES guidelines and the School policy must be complied with. Dependent on the nature of the visit and the age of the pupils - staff must therefore check that they comply with all school requirements and regulations. The organiser must be satisfied that the venue is a suitable one, with all that this entails, and, where applicable, that any officials from the venue who will be involved in the visit, are qualified and dependable.…

High school graduation in American cultures can be known to be one of the greatest rite of passage. The days and even months prior to graduation signify the end of ones high school days, the end of their childhood and entrance into adulthood. By the time most adolescence graduate from high school, they have already become an adult. They are able to purchase cigarettes or tobacco and lottery tickets. Along with this freedom of adulthood also comes entrance into clubs, the right to vote, and no longer having a provisional drivers license.…

    Peter Brown

In Peter A. Brown’s “Restoring Perspective: $1,000 for the Prom Is Immoral”, I believe he is attempting to show the importance of the morality of money and I think in made the prom his main point. My hero is the principal, who canceled his school's senior prom, not just to prevent underage drinking and sex at post-event parties, but also to make the kids and parents consider how they spend their money. It is the best recent example of an authority figure standing up to both the culture of conspicuous consumption and of rights without responsibilities. When teenagers, or for that matter adults, think it is the norm to spend $200 on tennis shoes, $250 on blue jeans and $5 on a cup of coffee, it's no wonder our society has lost its sense of perspective (Burton, 2011, pg. 9). What Kenneth Hoagland, the principal at Kellenberg Memorial High School in Uniondale, N.Y., did in refusing to accept the excesses of the prom, which he rightly labeled “an exaggerated rite of passage that verges on decadence,” was demonstrate common sense. Hoagland rightly thought that there is something innately wrong with students spending $1,000 or more on their prom outfit, flowers, limousines and the rest. And that didn't count the cost of the post-prom parties at beach houses or “booze cruises” that students attended, where the use of alcohol and the lack of supervision created “a time of heightened sexuality in a culture of anything goes,” as he put it. Kellenberg High School, he said, “Is willing to sponsor a prom, but not an orgy” (Burton, 2011, pg. 9).…

After going over everything on the agenda, our Link Crew coordinator announced we had something we needed to celebrate. She read a letter from one of our guidance counselors at the school. In the letter she described how a parent emailed her a few weeks before school started to tell her that her daughter has anxiety when it comes to new beginnings. She said her daughter stayed home from school her first week of middle school because she was so nervous. However, her first day of high school was a magical experience for her. The parent explained how her daughter was bouncing in her seat at the dinner table describing what a great day she had. Our Link Crew director announced whose group she was in, and sure enough, it was…
