people our world is really made of, but with time it also comes to show what a difference it can make for future generations.
During the years of the Civil Rights Movement, peaceful resistance became a huge aspect that was taken into great consideration.
Martin Luther King was a civil rights leader and preacher that had a successful bus boycott and was then invited to come to Birmingham to help nonviolent protesters. He sought to find justice by helping the whites understand the everyday life of an African American. In the “Letter from Birmingham Jail” that King wrote after being arrested, he argues that since the white moderates have ignored the issue of discrimination, the African Americans have decided to take direct action; they will no longer wait for justice and an end to segregation and hope that having similar religious values will help the white community come to their senses. This movement was done to show the white community that many African Americans were willing to make an effort to improve the world. Without the efforts that were made to notice the issue in the first place, the African American community and other minorities would have continued to suffer
discrimination.
Civil disobedience is marked as the savior of many minorities. During 1967, the Mexican American community had a significant high school dropout rate among any ethnicity. Mexican American students had very little support from their high school teachers and some were even punished for any presence that they would make of their Mexican American Culture. Because of this, a teacher named Sal Castro and groups of different high school students in East Los Angeles came together to present a way to improve the number of high school dropouts. Their goals included bilingual bi-cultural education, more Latino teachers and administrators, smaller class sizes, better facilities, and the revision of textbooks to include Mexican American history (Global). After being rejected by the Board of Education to look into this issue, the East Los Angeles students threatened school walkouts. Multiple different walkouts, some deadly, were created to help the Board of Education realize that change needed to be made. With the help of the East Los Angeles community coming together, demands were not met but they did help improve the college recruitment of Latino students. With the help of Sal Castro and students of East Los Angeles, many people were able to recognize the importance of fixing a enormous issue that was done with great sacrifice.
It comes to the point where cruelty needs to be present in any form to make a change. A peaceful protest brought by a group of people comes to show that change is always needed. A free society has the power to peacefully resist in obeying the law because of disagreement. It is the motive that one holds that truly marks a difference in the world. If there were no presence of civil disobedience then how would the world improve. This only goes to show that peaceful resistance to laws positively impacts a free society. The only way to view this positive impact, however, is through letting time pass.
