Normalize This Figurative Language
Spoken word poetry is poetry that cannot just be left alone on paper, rather it demands to be performed. It is art because it focuses on the aesthetic use of simple words to say things in a more meaningful and deeper way. Kanazi’s piece titled “Normalize This,” uses simple words to convey a powerful message about the need to stop normalizing violence and the need to bring awareness of the humanitarian crisis occurring in Palestine. Perrine R. and Arp argue that “poetry is a kind of language that says more and says it more intensely than does ordinary language” (135). Kanazi’s spoken word performance takes poetry and incorporates intonation and an onstage performance, rather than exclusively a piece of paper, to create an aesthetic experience

An important aspect of Distinctive Visuals is uncovering ideas and meaning through imagination shown in lyrics, words or signs as this is explored in both texts. During the short film the homeless man is alone, shot in two big famous cities, Sydney and New York, the composer questions what is that people love about these cities. This is communicated through extreme close up shots of signs around the cities formed together to send their message. In, “But what is that we love. Do we love the people or the place. Do we measure empathy by donations” questions the realities of society that these two big cities that people love so much, is it the place that makes it just a beautiful place or is it the people because there are unfortunate and under privileged people being disregarded. “Do we measure empathy by donations” also questions society, does contributing to donations truly show that they care. The phrases used put together from signs and posters around the cities in order to send their message makes Genderen’s video unique as it shows how words can tell a story. These simple methods represent how easy it can be to make a change and the great impact it can have on underprivileged people.…

Read the English translation of the following poem by the Armenian poet Zahrad. It will aid in your comprehension if you take note of the poem's title. Then, in one or two carefully constructed paragraphs, explore how rhythm is created in the poem and how it interacts with other elements such as imagery to create an effect—an impact on the audience. In your response, be sure to describe what feeling, effect, or impact the rhythm and other elements achieve.…

    We Real Cool

In this paper the topic that will be written about is the poem entitled “We Real Cool”. This poem was written in 1960 by a woman named Gwendolyn Brooks. In this paper three topics have been selected so that this poem will be able to be analyzed. With each element, it will de discussed how those elements affected and interested me while reading. The three elements that have been written about are form, language, and content. Form, in poetry, can be understood as the physical structure of the poem: the length of the lines, their rhythms, their system of rhymes and repetition (The Poetry Archive, 2005-2010). Form is the technical word for the look and sound of language (Kwikguide, 2009). In a poem, form is largely what separates itself from other types of literary works. Poetry is easily distinguishable from a short story or a play by the arrangement the author chooses to organize his or her thoughts. Words contain meaning this is their content. (Kwikguide, 2009). The content of a poem is essentially the subject matter and conveys the scene, an event, or even a feeling. Language in poetry is defined as something spoken from the heart. These three elements come together to express a specific sentiment from the author, but more importantly, to evoke an emotional response from its reader.…

Art is expression through creativity that allows us to deliver a message that may be more significant than just words on a page. Art connects with people on a more emotional and spiritual level, and it is this that can help to drive home the artists message in his or her works. Natalie Czech’s “A Poem by Repetition by Allen Ginsberg” combines two powerful pieces of art, poetry and photography to create one cohesive piece of art. The art is inspired by writings documented in Ginsberg’s personal journal; not originally being a poet, Ginsberg later had his journal turned into a poem. Czech later discovered the poems and altered the ending to a broader form of self-appreciation, changing the last line of the poem from “anybody,” to “anything.”…

Jilly Dybka’s “Memphis, 1976” offers a style of the Sestina in a topic that I found very interesting, so as I began to write my formal poem, I read this work throughout. The speaker in “Memphis, 1976” has a very condescending or upset voice as they describe the grotesque image of Elvis as he deteriorated. I found this image and the voice very interesting and attempted to create a unique voice in my own formal poem. Where Dybka’s poem follows a narrative style, I used this form to create the how-to poem. Dybka’s work inspired me to create a moving poem that uses grotesque images and interesting…

Alcohol and the many uses of it have evolved throughout history. Since the beginning of time alcohol has impacted all different types of cultures and has shown the world how ambiguous a substance can be. In 1920 the 18th Amendment banning the sale, manufacture, and transport of alcohol was passed. This was called Prohibition. Prohibition was supposed to decrease crime, death rate due to alcohol abuse, and the overall consumption of alcohol. Prohibition was a failure because it did the opposite of everything is was supposed to prevent.…

Through the medium of poetry, composers are able to powerfully convey ideas and express personal opinions of the world around them. Robert Gray, an Australian poet who is known for his effective use of visual imagery, clearly evokes ideas and express personal concerns of ‘Global warming’ ‘sacrafice’ His incorporation of explicit language techniques, such as diction further accentuates his perspective towards the world around us.
