I- One day, I met someone here who asked me if in Africa it is common to see monkeys roam the streets along with people or if Africans go about entirely without clothes. I was like WAOOOOO! NO! People often refer to Africa as the Dark Continent, meaning that Africans are poor, ignorant, dark-skinned, dangerous, and so on. Transition: Let’s start with the background of Côte d’Ivoire.
BODY
I- First of all, Côte d’Ivoire is located on the South Coast of West Africa.
A- The land is about 124,502 square miles, an area slightly larger than New Mexico and many others countries such as United Kingdom, Ghana, Italy.
B- The region was rich in ivory because of the elephants and other animals who lived there, as a result the region was called “Côte d’Ivoire”, Coast of Ivory.
1- These resources attracted many foreigners such as French and Portuguese explorers in the 15th century. However, French ancestry began to intersect the history of Côte d’Ivoire, and the land became a colony of France in 1843 before gaining independence in 1960.
2- One of Côte d’Ivoire’s great hero is Félix Houphouët-Boigny. He was the father of Côte d’Ivoire’s independence and the first president, which he remained for thirty years. Known as the “Sage of Africa” or the “Grand Old Man of Africa”, he built strong relationship with France that even allowed him to become the first African to be minister in Europe’s government.
