Simon, in document E, is trying to figure out what exactly the beast is, “Then he sets off, weak and staggering, to tell the other boys that the beast is human.” When he goes to tell the boys, he is mistaken for the best. The boys then brutally kill him, “There are no words, and no movements but the tearing of teeth and claws.” Stated in document F. As Simon tries to tell the boys that the beast is human, he instead gets mistaken for the beast and gets murdered by the true, human beast. The human boys with “teeth and claws” symbolize the savagery of human nature in the form of the “beast”.…

His breakdown occurs only in chapter 9 and so does his death. After they find what they believe to be the beast, he decides to go on his own, not to leave the group permanently, but to go investigate the mountain on his own for a while. The first thing that may have caused his breakdown, though we can't be sure, may have been when he found the body of the pilot that had fallen from the sky sometime earlier in the book. “The flies had found the figure too. The life-like movement would scare them off for a moment so that they made a dark cloud round the head. Then as the blue material of the parachute collapsed the corpulent figure would bow forward, sighing, and the flies settle once more” (p. 210) Anyone could agree that that would be a bit traumatising to anyone, especially a young boy who was likely already beginning to lose hope of ever seeing the world he once knew of again. After that incident, he stumbles on the head of the sow that had been killed by Jack and his crew, only to have fantastical visions, or delusions, involving it. He may have reached some helpful conclusions through these delusions, that the beast was not something they could fight or needed to fear, that it was actually their inner urges to destroy and be wild, but there is no denying that the pig’s head did not actually talk to him and anything he saw was made in his own mind. As helpful as this information could have been, Simon was soon killed by the other boys after they worked themselves into a frenzy and mistook him for the beast. “Kill the beast! Cut his throat! Spill his blood!...Him! Him!” (p. 218) This chapter was one of the most madness driven in the book, showing not only Simons, but also everyone else in the…

When he arrives, he discovers that it is indeed a dead parachute guy. Rushing back down the mountain to tell the others, Simon loses his footing and begins to crawl. The other boys see this mysterious object crawling out of the forest. Out of fear, the boys think that the object is the beast and start to beat it. Things get out of hand and, the “beast was on its knees in the center, its arms folded over its face”(152). The boys did not know that the beast was Siamon until halfway through the song. Even Though the boys knew that it was Simon, they kept hurting him out of fear of the knowledge that he was telling them. The next day Ralph and Piggy talk about what happened and all Ralph could say was “Simon” (155). This was the moment that the boys realized what they had done to the only person that knew all about the…

“The rock struck piggy a glancing blow from chin to knee”, and he fell off the cliff and died as the conch “exploded into a thousand white fragments.” (181) Piggy died after trying to help everyone and did nothing really wrong or against anyone. Piggy died an innocent death just like Simon because he had done nothing wrong but stand up for himself. He had tried to help Ralph all the way until he died and had helped Ralph realize what was happening. Thoughtful and smart, Simon was dragged along by the littluns to get the fruit “they could not reach”(56), then Simon “passed the fruit back down to the endless, outstretched hands”(56) of the children. Simon is like a mocking bird because he did nothing, but just trying to help out as much as he could, yet he still died innocently when the hunters mistook him as the beast. Giraffes in Captivity

Giraffes are a big attraction in zoos because of their friendly and outgoing behavior. However, in the wild they are not as acquaint. Their lives are dramatically different in captivity than they would be if they were living in the wild. In the wild a giraffes diet consists of grass, twigs, leaves, and fruits from the trees. However, in captivity they are fed a carefully balanced diet to give them the nutrients that their bodies need. This includes alfalfa hay, pellets with added vitamins, crackers that have a lot of grain and possibly even tree bark in them, and fruit and vegetables ("Giraffes in Captivity"). Giraffes tend to consume a lot of water all at one time. When doing this in captivity it is much safer because the water is purified and safe for them to drink, but when they drink a lot in the wild they are more susceptible to dying from getting viruses obtained from the water. In the wild giraffes live about 20 to 25 years depending on gender, but in zoos giraffes live a bit longer. They live from 28 to 30 years of age. Also, in captivity calves have a greater chance of survival because there are no predators such as hyenas, leopards, wild dogs, or crocodiles. 50% of calves don't survive the first 6 moths of their life because of predators. In the wild, giraffes who reach adult hood are much more likely to survive from predators because they can use a forceful kick fending off any attackers ("Giraffe - The Facts"). In the wild, giraffes do not lay down very much because if a predator were to attempt to attack they would not have enough time to stand up and defend themselves. However, in captivity giraffes do not have to worry about lions attacking them, so they lie down much more. Additionally, in captivity giraffes are given toys and other objects for stimulation due to the lack of environment that they have to roam around in ("Giraffes in Captivity"). Recently at the Copenhagen zoo in Denmark a healthy baby giraffe, Marius, was…

In The Lord of the Flies, there are many tragedies, the death of Simon when he was mistaken for the beast, the death of Piggy and the conch, their only symbol of authority, being broken, and ultimately the loss of innocence in the boys. The tragedy most people refer to in the book is Piggys death and the broken conch, for this reason I will be comparing the three main characters and what they could have done to prevent this tragedy.…
