The controversy surrounding slavery between the North and South was crucial. The North did not want to have slavery because it was evil and cruel, but the South wanted slavery because it was their way of making money in the economy. Northerners had wanted to get rid of slavery, but Southern states seceded, leading to the Civil War. During the Civil War, in late January of 1863, President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, which freed slaves in the Confederate states. Freedmen were allowed to join the Union army as shown in Document 5. After the Union won the Civil War, the 13th amendment was issued, abolishing slavery in…
Southerners justified the act, because of their belief that slaves were property, and even captured some free African-Americans. However, the act meant Northerners had to go against their beliefs, and help capture runaway slaves due to the consequences of not cooperating.…
Before reading Slavery in the North by Shane White I was not familiar with the slavery that took place in the north. Shane White talks about northern slaves by stating “we would expect them to be well acculturated to white society. Yet evidence from an archaeological dig at Parting Ways hints at a more complex picture.” Shane’s point of view is believing that the blacks had a harder time adapting to white society than we thought. However, I believe slaves in the north were able to acculturate into white society unlike Shane.…
they asked that it be amended to include the Bill Of Rights. The Bill Of…
The northerns believe that the blacks were unfitted or not ready for political involvement because they needed time to “forget” their time as a slave. ( Doc D) What the Northerns were trying to say is that they…
Most Northerners didn’t hate slavery enough to do anything about it. Sadly, it was an ugly part of American culture and people were content ignoring it so they could go about their lives. They didn’t agree with slavery but they feared that if the slaves were freed they would move north and take jobs away from white families. White people in the North were expanding westward into the territories where they could farm their own land and make money off crops. They did not want the territories to have the southern slave based labor system because it would only benefit a few wealthy people and it would greatly harm the country’s economy to expand slavery.…
Southern resistance stoppe a lot of progress from happening, people would threaten other people to vote Democratic instead or Radical. For most people a gun pressed to their temple while somebody told them to vote for Democrats or they would be killed is a great reason to vote that way. The KKK was a big problem in the South as well, they would beat people until the followed their will. The KKK hated the Radicals and did everything in their power to try to destroy them. Northern neglect was the main reason for the death of Reconstruction.…
Slavery; North The North during the civil war era saw no need for slavery as factory production boomed. Most of the workers in the factories were woman and children who worked for a low wage, so slavery was not a hot commodity. The political cartoon to the left is considered a northern view based upon how the north fought for the freedom and equality of slaves. The cartoon depicts the blacks and the whites uniting through a waltz. The definition of Amalgamation is to unite or combine two.…

Both Northern abolitionists and Southern slaveholders both believed they were defending the Constitution prior to the Civil War. Though both believed that they were trying to defend their Constitutional rights, their opposition was what led to war breaking out. Northern abolitionists believed that to best act on the rights set by the Constitution they needed to free slaves. They argued that African-Americans were people, and should have the rights of freedom as American Citizens. They thought that all slaves should be set free from their masters with no compensation to the slaveowners.…
“..And they have already been actually employed in kidnapping, catching, and keeping slaves. Therefore, if you value your liberty, and the Welfare of the Fugitives among you, shun them in every possible manner, as so many Hounds on the track of the most unfortunate of your race. Keep a sharp look out for kidnappers, and have your top eye open.” (Document C). The Fugitive Slave Law forced Northerners to report any runaway slaves to authorities. It can be inferred from the quoted document that the Northerners did not want to do so and they took any opportunity to avoid it. As said in Document D, Northerners believed “The [Fugitive Slave Law] is a statue which enacts the crime of kidnapping, -a crime on one footing with arson and murder. A man’s right to liberty is as inalienable as his right to life…” Northerners clearly opposed slavery and felt it was unconstitutional, but the Southerners didn’t feel the…
The first issue is about Freedom, the slaves are still legal in south while north outlawed slavery, which causes tension between south and north. The North were fighting so hard to oppose slavery while the south were opt out on slavery.…
They depended greatly on the North for their industries and factories, because they had very few. They also opposed federal spending on internal improvements and they wanted no tariffs. Even despite having a somewhat weak economy, the South wanted to gain their independence to become their own country, and to have their own way of life, which included slavery as legal. When Abraham Lincoln was elected in 1860, the South thought that they would have no voice in the government, considering that Abraham Lincoln was against slavery. In hopes of being their own country, the South had no intention of fighting a war. However, before the war started, the South was unwilling to compromise. They thought that slavery should be allowed in all of the territories. They disagreed to the Missouri Compromise and to parts of the Compromise of 1850. Many felt that these compromises were unfair and biased. The South felt that their way of life and views on slavery were right and just. They turned to what they thought was their only choice: seceding from the Union. This enrage the North, which was one of the main causes of the Civil War.…
Growing up in the United States it is a requirement to learn about the history of our nation. One of the biggest events of our history would be the slave trade. In the events of slavery there have been many names of important heroes that ended slavery which include one of the most significant, Fredrick Bailey (Douglass). In his story “Narrative of the Life of Fredrick Douglass”, Douglass explains in great details his horrors and accomplishments living as an African American during that time.…
(Dupree & Fisehl, Jr, 1960 p.472) However, while the idea of ending slavery in the south to aid the North in the Civil War it also had unintended consequences. First there was a division of labor in New York between wealth upper class citizens and lower poor class citizens of Irish background. The idea of emancipating slaves lead to unrest of labor competition in the north. In addition there was already a draft that was occurring at the time that conflicted with the higher and lower class citizens where the higher class citizens can buy or substitute themselves from the draft whereas the lower class are unable to have said privilege.…
