The country of Greece is also well known for its rich history of traditions and customs. Most of the same traditions and festivals still take place today because of the strong connection that the country links from its past. Ancient Greece had a good side to it and also a bad side to it as well. Air pollution and health concerns are a major problem in the country today. Greece produces 5.2 million tons of solid waste as well as 1,500 tons of hazardous waste per year (Dubois, Skoura, and Gratsaniti 51). The overwhelming amount of garbage produce by the country makes it almost impossible to have proper treatment at landfills. The garbage is burned at the landfills which produces harmful chemical pollutants into the atmosphere. Pollution is becoming a major environmental problem for Greece. The air pollution makes way for a decrease in animal population. Due to the damaging effects of a decline in healthy environment animal extinction occurs. Although Greece is entirely surrounded by sea, the marine population has decreased. This is the result of overfishing by locals and uncontrolled tourist activity which causes water pollution. Seals and dolphins are often killed because they are viewed as competition in the hunt for fish. The decline of a healthy environment leads to extinction in the animal population which will eventually lead to a decrease in the natural food
