Zy’mir Gettis November 6, 2013
English II Gr. 10th Hr. 203 Not Interested!
The week after graduation was one of the craziest days in my life so far. so many things occurred that you wouldn’t think a teen would do. I was trying to be negotiated with to do multiple things that night but most of these things were not in my interest. Although one of these things stood out to me a lot, I would never forget that long night.
After graduation everyone was prompt and ready for high school. As the summer began to start everybody would be at this one spot. “The Rec”, The Rec was a local recreation center on my street. When I went to The Rec I would always be suited in my best basketball attire whether I wore red blue, purple, orange, green, or even rainbow sneakers my socks corresponded. I stood in front of The Rec, wearing my sky blue Lebron 9 soldiers customized to say Zy’mir on the side with my sky blue and white elite socks to match, Ready to play ball. I walked in the gym, to a fowl stench smacking me in the nose, it smelt like sweaty gym socks and armpits I played 4 on 4 basically the whole entire time, I dribbled up the court with a hesitation move to get by the defender. Under the legs around my back and spin move to an open basket. Free lay-up I thought to myself but too many unnecessary moves. “Point” I yelled because I had to go to the bathroom. I drove hard to the basket with an easy lay-up but saw an open man that wasn’t really getting his touches and kicked it out to him. As he pulled up he released the ball from his clutch producing a beautiful form. As the shot was up I walked off the court because I already knew it was going in. Swish!
I headed to the bathroom and smoke flooded the air, I was disoriented on where to go. I found my way to the stalls and many guys were sitting on the sinks and benches smoking. I looked in shock because most of the guys here I graduated with. Maurice, My right hand man in class and on

As the buzzer sounds, the game begins, and I go in for the tip-off. I seize the ball, with the realization that the game has just begun and I must act. I spot an opening and take it. I jump, trying to score, but my legs are taken out from under me, and I hit the floor. I hear a pop, and in an instant, I lose everything that made me who I am.…

After the third and fourth quarter we ended the game 44-6 with 36 points scored by me. Third quarter 12 points were made by me, and fourth quarter one 3 point shot was scored by me. After the game was over we went and got ice cream for the whole team. We all chose our favorite ice cream then devoured our ice creams as a team. After the ice cream we made a promise to each other that we weren’t going to lose a game at all this season, and we all went home and I will always remember this basketball game and how good of a team we were. This is my story, what is…

A memory from my athletics that will stick with me forever was the last time I was able to lace up and play basketball on our home court. We played a long time rival, Aquin. The game was down to the wire and I was able to tie the game with 24 seconds left. Then we got the ball back and Ellie was fouled with about a second left, which if anyone on our team were to be put on the line, I would choose her. She went up and swooshed the first shot! Then, since Aquin wouldn't be able to get the rebound, make it down the court, and shoot with the time left, coach told her to miss the second shot. Ellie then winded up and chucked the ball right off the backboard so they ended up getting the ball out of bounds anyway. We blocked the throw in, and I ran…

We waited in the gym for about 4 hours, then I got hungry. I walked through the dark hallway to use the vending machine. After I got my honey bun, I walked around to the field house to see if they posted the team. They did, 14 id numbers on one sheet of paper. I looked up and down the list multiple times looking for my id number and unfortunately it wasn’t on there. My heart was broken and I was so confused. I walked home teary-eyed and when I arrived home I cried my eyes out. After that I didn’t play basketball for a whole week, which I had never done. After that week I got back in the gym, and kept playing every day as usual. I went to all of their games because I loved the sport and I wanted to support my friends. After the season ended everything went back to normal, we kept going to the YMCA every day. Now school has ended and summer league starts. Coach put me on Jr. Varsity just too test my skills and the first game, it was the best game of my life. I dunked the ball on a fast break and I couldn’t miss. I was the star player and that showed coach I was better so he put me on varsity. All in all I am just saying never give up and work as hard as you can, it will pay…

On January 26th, I made a huge error in my basketball game against West Central. To anybody else, that game might have seemed unimportant- insignificant really. They were not a conference rival or a sectional team. To me however, this game was very significant because I used to attend that school. At that game, I played all of my friends from kindergarten to fifth grade. I hoped that I didn’t make a fool of myself. I hoped to do amazing so that all of my old friends would see what a great basketball player I had become. I hoped that I would make a play so amazing that everyone would remember it. While I would certainly not forget the play I made, it was not the spectacular one I had dreamed. My gym teacher- Mr. Prairie asked the class, “Who’s ready for the basketball game tonight against West Central,” and I wondered if I was. Because of my insistent worrying I could not manage to make a play through all of gym class (we were playing basketball)…

I have always love to play basketball. The swish when you make it just right, and the boom of the basketball hitting the floor “are sounds I love”. When I first started playing basketball, my mom and my couch Richard knew that I was expectational. I played with Richard for a few years, then one day he told us about this newspaper ad he saw for a team named “Eugene Fire”. My mom decided to check it out, so she called the coach, Jim. He said I probably won't make the team, but I believed I could. So I would try anyways.…

It was a Saturday and we were playing Van Wert in a regular season basketball game and it was close. It was a Junior varsity game. We were only playing two quarters due to the lack of numbers. The game didn’t count for much but we were giving it our all. Van Wert wasn’t a favorite of ours and we were doing just about anything just to win. The game was intense. The coaches were yelling. The crowd was cheering. The gym exploded with sound coming from all directions. We were equally matched. We trailed for most of the game but we were always very close. As the game was winding down, we were trailing by just a few points. We had the ball. The ball was stolen and we were all sprinting down the court to stop it. I got a hand on the ball from behind…

I had just finished my freshman year of high school, now playing on my school’s summer baseball team. It was a perfect summer night on the baseball field; playing against one of the teams I disliked the most, Ava. It was always a close game playing them; they had good players who always played hard. Going into the 7th inning the game was tied, three to three. I came up to the plate wanting to help my team win the game. As the pitch came in my eyes lit up, it was a fastball right down the middle. I swung and hit the ball into left field.…

As the day started with the sound of cars passing by with the engine roaring, I knew it was time to go. I awoke from a dream that a 17-year would have about sports, specifically a 17-year old with the championship game, that happened to be on that day as well. I had the utmost confidence that my teammates and I will be able to deliver something that couldn’t be done by the last “dream team.” Those players had the utmost belief in each other and seemed that they knew where each person would go. It seemed they had a psychological connection, which I presume came from the relationship they had off the court. I would see them roaming the hallways with a smile that would give anyone belief that they can achieve those miracles. As time passed they grew older, flew towards a new goal. One became an assistant coach at UC Berkeley, one is fighting to become one of the starters and prove his worth at Washington State, and others stayed at community College still hoping there dream of playing college basketball becomes a reality. Now, after those long practices where you had players saying…

Since I was 7 years old, basketball has played an integral part of my life. I have devoted countless hours to not just a sport, but a passion, an outlet; to the game that I love. When I arrived at Bow Middle School as a fifth grader, my classmates and I would always look up to the 7th and 8th grade middle school basketball teams. Every year during winter carnival, the boys and girls teams would play a game in front of the entire school. Playing in that game became a dream and a goal of mine, but first I would need to make the team. For three years I developed my basketball skills, using my passion for the sport and desire to play in that game as motivation. When tryouts for basketball in 8th grade drew near, I knew I was ready. However a new coach would be at the helm this year. Our new basketball coach was also a coach for the youth football program. This resulted in numerous football…

It seemed that all my years of hard work had all come down to this moment. All those days that I would spend hours at the gym, making sure I had made all my shots and perfected every dribble move, not even bothering to take Sunday off because if I wanted to go somewhere with basketball, I would have to eat, sleep and breathe basketball. I refreshed the inbox of my email, and there it was, the decision that would make or break my basketball career. I had tried out for one of the most elite club basketball teams in Wisconsin, Oshkosh Flight 14’s team. I think I clicked on that email about five-hundred times in anticipation while it loaded. I skimmed the first sentence and my jaw dropped on my desk. The words were tattooed to my eyelids, I could…
