FOREWORD
Users of various civil engineering codes have been feeling the need for explanatory handbooks and other compilations based on Indian Standards. The need has been further emphasized in view of the publication of the National Building Code of India in 1970 and its implementation. The Expert Group set up in 1972 by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India carried out in-depth studies in various areas of civil engineering and construction practices. During the preparation of the Fifth Five-Year Plan in 1975, the Group was assigned the task of producing a Science and Technology plan for research, development and extension work in the sector of housing and construction technology. One of the items of this plan was the production of design handbooks, explanatory handbooks and design aids based on the National Building Code and various Indian Standards and other activities in the promotion of the National Building Code. The Expert Group gave high priority to this item and on the recommendation of the Department of Science and Technology, the Planning Commission approved the following two projects which were assigned to the Bureau of Indian Standards : a) Development programmc on engineering construction, and b) Typification for industrial code implementation for building and civil

buildings.

The objective of this lab was to figure out which has a higher cell respiration rate between crayfish and elodea. In order to figure this out we first set up three beakers to represent our control, elodea and crayfish and filled them with 75mL of culture solution which were dechlorinated making the solution acidic. We then had to place both the elodea and the crayfish in separate beakers filled with 25mL of water. The increase in volume of the water would represent the volume of the two test subjects. We then covered each beaker with plastic, but for the elodea we placed it under a can so it could be in the dark. After waiting 15 minutes to allow them to respire we took it out and add four drops of phenolphthalein, which was also acidic, to both beakers. Once both beakers got their four drops we added drops of NaOH, which was a base, until the solution turned pink. Our results were that the respiration rate of the crayfish was higher than the elodea.…

Traditions bring people together for a purpose of handing down beliefs or customs from generation to generation. The tradition could be for a joyous purpose like Thanksgiving or Christmas, and even a sorrowful purpose like funerals or a date like September 11. In “Mending Wall” the tradition brought two neighbors together each year to repair any damage made to their fence. However, in “The Lottery” the tradition brings the whole town together to sacrifice one person drawn in the lottery in hopes of bringing a bountiful harvest. While many traditions are important to hold over, in some instances it is essential to abolish traditions that have outrun their time in this modern age. For instance there was a law to forbid people from carrying pliers that could cut a fence made in the old days when there was the open range in Texas. Now there is no open range in Texas therefore we do not need the law anymore. The speaker in “Mending Wall” used repairing the fence as a symbol of ridding old traditions while in The Lottery everyone kept up the tradition even though people showed fear.…

This poem is a Carpe Diem poem in realizing and reflecting on how precious life is. Even when a dream seems so far reached and you face up and downs, one must hold onto them no matter what. Everyone must dream and live life to the fullest of their potential.…

Building codes and safety purpose. Building codes act an important role in construction and design phase. In the past, most building codes and standards have used prescriptive (or compliance) criteria. In recent years, there has been strong interest worldwide in developing codes and standards that are more performance based ( Foliente, 2000). The purpose of building codes are to increase safety in the design of the project and its construction. For example, according to the 2010 California Building Code, the multiple purpose is clearly stated that "to establish the minimum requirements to safeguard the public health, safety and general welfare through structural strength, means of egress facilities, stability, access to persons with disabilities, sanitation, adequate lighting and ventilation and energy conservation; safety to life and property from fire and other hazards attributed to the built environment; and to provide safety to fire fighters and emergency responders during emergency operations." (CBC, 2010). Building codes are created by the local governments, state and federal. The federal government is the least active participant, mandating design standards on such matters as the Americans with Disabilities Act. Actually, under the Tenth Amendment to the U.S. Construction, building codes are a problem of state concern, and there is no national building code. Every cities and…
