Written Assignment for MODULE 6 Ethics

1. Reading Comprehension- from the readings-online and printed texts

A. List at least three things that are wrong with or problems with each of these theories:

1A- EGOISM- According to the Baier's conflict argument egoism is wrong because there are some moral circumstances in which conflict can’t be solved. Then there’s the Baier's Inconsistency Argument in which egoism requires that we believe that it’s wrong to prevent someone from performing their responsibility. “Another problem of egoism is that it cannot settle disputes among people. If everyone were to pursue their own self interests, what will happen when there is a conflict of interest? Egoism has no explanation or solution for this. For example, someone sees it is in their interest to kill their rich uncle in order to inherit his money. However it is in the uncle’s interest to stay alive and enjoy his money.” (ETHICS Alex Ru, 2001) Egoism cannot operate as an ethical system unless it has a solution to moral conflict among people. Under this egoism would only be incorrect, if it weren’t in that person's best interests. The argument from privileged interests states that it’s no different than racism in that we must be able to come up with some relevant disparities between the self and others to substantiate it or it’s no dissimilar than racism.

1B- UTILITARIANISM In utilitarianism an individual contemplates only the total summation of hurt and enjoyment and not how they’re spread throughout society. Even though the amount of hurt may be the same it could be spread out unjustly dependent on the society. A society based on slavery might produce the greatest amount of hurt for the greatest number. Another conflict arises from the individuals that content that the utilitarianism theory is too demanding. Their stand is that if an individual were expected to act in a way that increases the collective happiness above everything, utilitarianism would assume

Celia was the name of a young female slave, who came to work for a prominent Missouri family called the Newsoms. Robert Newsom, a plantation owner in Callaway, Missouri, purchased her at age 14. Newsom was recently widowed and it seems he purchased Celia, looking for sex. He started raping her after being brought back to the farm. From then on, Newsom "visited" Celia often in a cabin he provided for her which was very close to the main household. Over the years, Celia had two children with Newsom, which he also considered "his property". The interesting thing about Celia’s story is that it recounts a tale of social strife and clearly indicates the fact that slaves were playing with a heavily stacked deck in relation to their Caucasian opposites.…
