EPISTEMOLOGY
Definition: Epistemology is the study of knowledge, especially regarding its validity, methods, scope and distinguishing between justified belief and opinion.
Example: The investigation of memory, conception and reasoning in cognitive Psychology.
THEORY
Definition: A set of ideas or statements that attempt to explain facts or phenomena. Speculation or abstract thought.
Example: Erikson’s theory of psychosocial development, Freud’s theory of psychosexual development and Classical conditioning.
MODEL
Definition: Theoretical representations that simulate psychological and/or social processes.
Example: Biological model – that views human behaviour in biological concepts.
Psychodynamic model – behaviour is brought about by unconscious inner forces.
Cognitive model – how people understand and think.
Humanistic model – Free will.
TECHNIQUE
Definition: a Practical method, skill, or art applied to a particular task.
In Psychology: Active technique and defensive technique.
Example: Obsessional technique, hysterical technique, paranoid technique, phobic technique.
