I know I shouldn’t have done it but I couldn’t help myself. It was just lying there and the temptation was overwhelming.

“Christina!”

My heart nearly jolted out of my chest.

“I need you to finish counting your money and then close your register. Take your break and I expect you to be back within an hour.”

“Yes, Richard.”

“Richard, a customer wants to confirm that the senior discount has been revoked for the saltine crackers,” the new recruit said.

“Samantha, just show them the flier.”

“They are insisting to talk to the manager and are getting pretty rowdy.”

“Fine, don’t forget Chris, one hour.”

In an hour I was already at the airport terminal with just a book bag in hand.

“That’s a lot of bags you got there,” a male voice said.

“No.”

“Christina, we can either leave quiet or we can both explain to the police how you got the money to buy that ticket.”

“Richard, I can’t go back I don’t belong there.”

Not being in the lower class is a privilege to the people who witness how difficult it is to live in those conditions and imagine what it would be like to live off of lower class jobs. Barbara Ehrenreich saw this and decided that she wanted to experience what it would be like and experience the hardship that they push through. Barbara discusses the difficulty of living in the lower class with the use of her first point of view/ honesty and her use of figurative language. In the novel, “Nickel and Dimed”, Barbara Ehrenreich uses a sarcastic, dramatic tone to support her argument that people who live in the lower class have a difficult time getting by with the present American economy.…

Last summer, I was on my way to work, in my lifeguard uniform travelling on a back street with a 25 mph speed limit when I came up behind a vehicle going about 15 mph. After a block or so I adjusted my car to see if there was traffic or pedestrians holding him up. There were none. The vehicle then pulled over and I slowed down even more and then assumed he was letting me pass so I passed and it was an undercover officer who then pulled me over. I was rudely greeted by the officer saying, “I don’t care how late I make you for your job; and I don’t care if you are a guard.”…

In the book Money and Class in America, Lewis Lapham claims that American culture idolizes the wealthy, believing that wealth is necessarily belied by quality of character and wisdom. He gives both cross-cultural and cross-historical examples to show that other cultures and at other times the highest esteem was given not only to the wealthy, but also to the intellectual, the powerful, and the artistic individuals of those societies. In contrast Lapham discusses Americans’ idolization of the wealthy, as well as their conflation of wealth and individual merit and worth. He then questions if Americans -- a supposedly egalitarian people who are all created equal. Nonetheless, this cult of wealth still pervades, though seemingly there is nothing to cause it, as similar nations are not afflicted by such an absurd ardor.…

America is ruled by capitalism, therefore making us a society of consumerism. Affluence is essentially the "American Dream" people are constantly striving for this unlimited wealth or comfortable lifestyle when in reality it doesn't exist. There will always be pressure to "keep up with the Jones" in order to achieve this idea of happiness. This concept is not something new Americans have been under this pressure since the 1950s. It's just increased due to the amount of advertisement being pumped out by the media. If the focus of affluence shifted to value things money can't buy like: good health, healthy relationships, and peace of mind. People would strive for that. I have noticed a trend of minimalism is becoming very popular. I think slowly…
