November Poem Analysis
November poem analysis

The poem I am going to be analyzing is called ‘November.’ This poem is about death. In the poem, the author Simon Armitage gives a clear message about what he thinks death is and how to deal with death. He also gives clear connection with the poem to the title, which makes the reader understand the poem better. In this essay I am going to include the following; the poets attitude to his subject, the poets descriptive skills, the language used, how the poem affects me, and more.

Firstly, Simon Armitage named the poem ‘November.’ I think he did this as it suggests November is the month where the leaves start falling off the trees. It is the month when everything starts turning dark and cold, which I think states death. It is the month before December, which is considered the end, meaning the grandma in the poem is close to dying. I think Simon Armitage names the poem this as the poem has to do with death. I believe that you have to read the poem before understanding the title, this because the word November could mean anything, but since the poem is about death we can connect the title with death more.

Secondly, the messages that were given throughout this poem implies that there is an on going cycle and that we are all going to die. This is shown when the character in the poem says ‘we are almost these monsters.’ From this phrase we can emphasize that they know they are also going to die some day. I know this because they describe the old people as having ‘slack breasts, stunned brains, and their boldness’ when they describe the old people like this it conveys zombies and monsters, so when the characters in the poem say ‘we are almost these monsters’ it means that they are also going to become like the old people they were describing. The old people that the characters were describing were dying, meaning they were almost becoming these monsters. The second message the author was telling us was that we are all hopeless to old people, for example if their body is failing we can’t help them and do anything about it since they are going to die. In addition to that I think the message is also that instead of feeling sad about it, you should just get on with your life, and try not to worry about it, because there is nothing anyone can do about it, and going around worrying isn’t going to make anything better.

Simon Armitage uses different descriptive skills during the poem. To begin with the author makes the poem interesting by comparing two completely different things. For example, he compares the word ‘terror’ which ‘dusk.’ This is interesting because terror is artificial meaning it is fake, meanwhile dusk is real. This makes the poem more interesting as Armitage uses artificial and real things together.
Another key descriptive skill to consider is that the author use fresh and varied vocabulary. For example, he uses words such as ‘monsters’ to describe old people. He also uses the phrase ‘I drive through the twilight zone.’ From these phrases and words we can see that the author is trying to make the poem more interesting. Rather than using old people Armitage uses the word monster to make the reader think more about what the he meant. Furthermore, Simon Armitage uses the phrase ‘I drive through the twilight zone’, which was an old TV show during the 70’s, which helps us figure out around what time this poem was set, as well as the atmosphere he was driving through and how he felt.
The author, Simon Armitage, does not tell us who John is. His feelings are not directly shown, as well as the other character in this poem, however, the speakers reassurance of him suggest that John is uneasy about what he is doing, whereas the other character (whom is unnamed) says ‘It is time.’ This suggests he or she knows what they are doing unlike John.
Simon Armitage uses images to describe the grandma very clearly, so it is easy to image what is happening to her and what she is doing. Armitage doesn’t specifically say what the grandma is doing; instead he uses complex words to make the reader think more carefully. For example, in the passage it says ‘she sinks’ which in my opinion is referring to hell as heaven is represented to be up and hell is supposed to be down, so the grandma is ‘sinking’ into hell.

This poem has the effect on me to seize the day, and to make the most out of it, also known as the ‘Carpe Diem’ reference. This means that you should take risks, you should do things that you normally wouldn’t do. This poem also tells the reader, as I mentioned before, not to go around worrying when a person is going to die, this is shown when the character in the poem says ‘One thing we have to get, John, is out of this life.’ This tells us that the characters in the poem wants to find the good in life, not bad, so they decide to get out of the miserable life they are in now and start a new fresh healthy loving life. I believe you should live life to its fullest because if you go around wondering all day when a you or someone else is going to die you wouldn’t live your life to the fullest, you would go around worrying which is not what life is about. Life is about living to the fullest extent, and making the most out of it. If your life were you thinking about how you are going to die it wouldn’t make your life interesting or fun at all. In conclusion this poem had the effect on me not to worry about thing so much, and do what you want to do without anything or anyone affecting that. As I just mentioned this helps people deal with death as they realize whilst reading this poem that it doesn’t matter what other people think of you, as long as you are happy you should continue to do what you are doing. You also shouldn’t go around worrying, again, you should live life to its fullest no matter what has happened or what situation you are in.

At times Armitage uses unusual detail. For example, in the passage it says ‘badly parked car.’ This is an unusual detail, as he didn’t describe why the car was so badly parked. This, again, makes the reader have to use their imagination; in my mind this represents the characters being so sad that they cannot park the car properly. It also means that they are so nervous and so heartbroken they cannot do anything properly, I think this is because later says in the poem that they had to get drunk to numb themselves. Another example would be ‘Outside we watch the evening, failing again.’ This is unusual as you would not describe the evening as failing, so the audience does not understand what this means, as people don’t tend to say this, meaning this is not a very usual thing to say which makes this an unusual detail.

In conclusion the most key techniques used in this poem were use of complex sentences, simple, repetitive structure, words suggesting effort/challenge/tough times, use of direct, specific words to give detail and add authenticity to the account. I believe this poem uses many techniques, words and phrases that require you to think very carefully about what the author has just written. As a summary of this poem, I think it has a lot of meaning to it even though it is very short. It gives a clear story, but at the same time it makes the reader think about some words and phrases extra carefully.

The poem begins with the narrator telling herself, “A few more steps, old feet.” (line 1). The old feet she refers to are the ancestor’s feet, that appear to be old and worn out from the rigorous journey they take. The speaker then goes on to say, “In pale tea I’ll see / me with her, tasting wild grapes” (lines 4-5). This shows her reminder of her ancestors in nature. The pale tea is the symbol of the clean, clear simplicity of nature and when the speaker simplifies herself, to the bare nothingness of nature it reveals to her, her ancestors. Then in the following lines, “at dawn, tasting dew / on tender leaves, another year.” (lines 6-7). The dawn represents a new day, a new start where she can again acknowledge her heritage. After, the speaker says, “her hands still guiding me, / at sunset grinding seeds” (lines 11-12). These hands guiding the speaker, are her ancestors leading her through their stories and nature around…

Repetition is a dominant technique that is used in the first half of the poem to accentuate the ongoing nature of bringing the body’s home. The repeated use of the pronoun “they’re” implies an impersonal ceaseless connection between the bodies and their handlers. In addition, it indicates an anonymous mass, thus accentuating the sheer number of deceased bodies. Dawe uses the metaphor ‘chow mien’ to indicate the messy disarray in Vietnam, the fallen trees represent the noodles whereas, the deceased bodies symbolise the meat. The vicious characteristics of war can also be determined by the personified simile “whining like hounds”. This allows the reader to feel the reverberating, hostile sound that is comparable to a hound dog. The aftermath affect of war can be recognised through the metaphors, “the spider swings in his bitter geometry” and “telegrams tremble from a wintering tree”. This specifically emphasises the arbitrary pain that affects the people who receive the telegrams. By personifying the telegram and describing it as ‘trembling’, it allows the reader to interpret the significance of the news the deliverer is bearing. By contrasting telegrams to the number of falling leaves from a ‘wintering tree’, it indicates the colossal number of unfortunate…

Hayden’s poem “Those Winter Sundays” is about a man lacking appreciation for the hard work and dedication that he does on a day to day basis for his job, but his child loves and appreciates him for all of the hard work that he does. The poem was from a child’s point of view and the theme of Those Winter Sundays is created through the stream of consciousness, conflicts, symbolism, and a flat/ static relationship of the poem. The father rises early on Sundays after a dense week of work, it seems as though no one appreciates him. Considering that the father work all the time the father might not show that he cares because he is not emotionally intact. However, getting up early to attend work shows that he cares because he is doing what he has to do to take care of the house. “Sundays to my father got up early. No one ever thanked him” (line1 & 5). This line represents a loving child who watches their father despises on getting up every Sunday to go to work and never receives a thank you for all of the hard work that he has done.…

In the above lines pulled from the poem "One Today", I put the words in bold that I would change if I had been the author. I would change the word "write" to deliver, because anyone can write a poem, but Blanco was stating that his mothers hard work got him where he is today, and not everyone is able to deliver a speech at a presidential inauguration. In the second and third examples, I would change "hear" to observe and "tired" to weary, as I believe those are stronger word choices that will get the authors point across with more conviction. I would change the word "head" in the fourth example to trudge, because in the following lines, he gives examples of hardship and is trying to convey how exhausted the person is. Finally, I would change…

The works we studied within Creative Writing were all helpful in creating my own works to submit to the class. Throughout all of the reading, many of the works inspired me in different ways, whether it was short story plot ideas or word usage in the poems. While crafting my work for the final portfolio, I reviewed many of the poems from our poetry packet in an effort to find inspiration and to create new interesting images. I took the most inspiration for my formal poem, which I found most difficult to write. One of the poems that was most useful to me was Jilly Dybka’s “Memphis, 1976.” Dybka’s poem follows the sestina form; I also wrote my last poem in this form, so it helped to follow the form by looking at her poem as an example. Dybka’s…

Robert Hayden’s, Those Winter Sundays, is what we would call a constantly changing climate. Throughout the poem, Hayden uses the theme of cold and warm to express his feelings about his relationship with his father. When he uses the word “cold,” in his poem, it seems that the emotions he’s feeling with his father are rather “cold” and disheartened. When he uses the word “warm,” in the poem, it seems that the feelings he shared with his father are mended a bit and their relationship seems to be better than it used to be, if his father is still alive. The warmth and the cold are more than just physical feelings in this poem: they describe Hayden’s inner feelings…

The Carousel music serves as a symbol of untouchable childhood memories that will never change even when you grow up. When Holden and Phoebe get closer to the Central Park Carrousel, Holden hears the Carrousel music; “It played that same song about fifty years ago when I was a little kid” (Salinger 231). The hyperbole of “fifty years” represents Holden's love of childhood which for him seems so long ago. Holden misses his childhood and all that comes with it. Holden is saying that his childhood was “fifty years ago” because now he has to be an adult and take on responsibility. The repetition of playing the same song reflects the carrousel going around and around, which illustrates Holden staying in one place with his life. This depicts that…

In the poem “To This Day” by Shane Koyczan he shows that people that get bullied constantly aren’t able to blow stuff off as easy as others. In the poem he shows that some people need motivation and help. He shows this by stating in the poem,”We are not abandoned cars stalled out… and if in some way we are don’t worry we only got out to walk and get gas”. Gas could symbolize getting help from someone they know and trust, or could be trying to get help with therapy or things of that nature. Another meaning could be that they need to get motivation to keep going from something. The dark background colors could mean that they need better things to happen to get motivation from.…

The poem “If You were Coming in the Fall” is written by Emily Dickinson. Emily Dickinson studied at Amherst Academy and Mount Holyoke Female SEminary and wrote 1800 poems. About a dozen of her poems were published during her life. She mentions to her friend that various people in her life have died such as her friends and her teacher. In her poem, “IF you were Coming in the Fall,” she talks about waiting a long time for someone to return and the threat of an unknown length of time. In this poem, the theme is “waiting for a long and indefinite length of time makes people anxious and desperate.” I came to this conclusion because the overall tone of the poem is anxious and desperate. Also, the content always tells of huge amounts of time even when paraphrased.…
