Reflection Paper
Recommendation 4: Increase the proportion of nurses with a baccalaureate degree to 80% by 2020.
According to the IOM report, they wanted to increase the number of nurses with a baccalaureate degree by 80% (American Nurses Association, IOM report, 2010). I knew for myself this would mean for me to go back to school and get a higher level of degree to maintain my status in the nursing professional world. This is why I am presently in school to get my BSN and I am very excited to be able to say I am a part of the BSN nurses. This will allow me to be in competition with other nurses. …show more content…
Recommendation 5: Double the number of nurses with a doctorate by 2020.
According to the IOM report, they would like to double the number of nurses with a doctorate degree (American Nurses Association, IOM report, 2010).
I would like to go further in my career to either a master’s level in education. I know that the IOM report states that they would like nurses to be able to perform to the highest level of their capabilities and this will help the future of the nursing scope of practice. For me, I am looking to hopefully get a master’s degree in psychiatric nursing and be able to teach our future nurses in my field of Psychiatric Nursing.
Recommendation 6: Ensure that nurses engage in lifelong learning.
This is a requirement that I feel all nurses should be a part of no matter where they are at in their career. Just like the thirty continuing education units all nurses must have when renewing their nursing license, all nurses should always continue to learn and educate themselves on new advanced technologies and information so nurses can stay on top of their game. For me, I planned to continue my education level into a master’s program and continue to learn more about my psychiatric nursing field. How will increasing your level of education affect how you compete in the current job
market?
I know that for me I have to continue my education and this is why I am getting my BSN degree. I recently had to look for a job and had a hard time landing the position I presently have because I don’t have a BSN degree. I have been a RN for over twenty years and never have I had a hard time getting a job like I did three years ago. I always had several job offers lined up for me to pick from, but this time it was different. Because I don’t have my BSN it was a difficult task. I finally got offered the position I am presently in and immediately after I signed up for classes at Grand Canyon University.
How will increasing your level of education affect your role in the future of nursing?
I feel that increasing my level of education especially since I want to teach in my field of psychiatric nursing; will help me fulfill this mission. I love my field and would like to spread my knowledge to future new nurses. Being able to mold and influence future nurses is what I want to do. For this I will proceed in continuing my education to a master’s degree level and hopefully one day is able to teach future nurses through learning myself through education and experience.
Conclusion
In conclusion, I feel that all nurses should continue to educate themselves through schooling, research or just reading up on new technologies and information to advance their own knowledge to be the best nurse possible.
