NT1310 Unit 2 assignment
RBOCS- Regional Bell operating company (RBOC) is a term describing one of the U.S. regional telephone companies (or their successors) that were created as a result of the breakup of American Telephone and Telegraph Company (AT&T, known also as the Bell System or "Ma Bell") by a U.S. Federal Court consent decree on December 31, 1983. The seven original regional Bell operating companies were Ameritech, Bell Atlantic, BellSouth, NYNEX, Pacific Bell, Southwestern Bell, and US WEST. Each of these companies owned at least two Bell operating companies (Bell operating company). The BOCs were given the right to provide local phone service while AT&T was allowed to retain its long-distance service.
ILEC- An ILEC (incumbent local exchange carrier) is a telephone company in the U.S. that was providing local service when the Telecommunications Act of 1996 was enacted. ILECs include the former Bell operating companies (BOCs) which were grouped into holding companies known collectively as the regional Bell operating companies (RBOCs) when the Bell System was broken up by a 1983 consent decree.
CLEC- In the United States, a CLEC (competitive local exchange carrier) is a telephone company that competes with the already established local telephone business by providing its own network and switching. The term distinguishes new or potential competitors from established local exchange carriers (LECs) and arises from the Telecommunications Act of 1996, which was intended to promote competition among both long-distance and local phone service providers.

Verizon Communications began its existence in 1984 as Bell Atlantic. Bell Atlantic was one of seven “Baby Bells” created by the government breakup of the Bell System, also known as the American Telephone and Telegraph Company (AT&T). Prior to 1984, AT&T was the largest private business enterprise in the world. Several events contributed to the divestiture of AT&T, most notably the antitrust suit filed in 1974, charging that AT&T had unlawfully monopolized the telecommunications market. The divestiture resulted in the creation of seven regional holding companies. One of those, Bell Atlantic was based out of Philadelphia and provided telecommunications services in Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersy, Virginia, West Virginia, and District of Columbia.…

AT&T Corporation eventually became the dominant telephone company in the United States, holding a virtual monopoly over communication services for most of the 20th century. The corporation controls the communication lines, structuring its acquisitions of smaller companies, and selling off non essential smaller phone companies to bypass the monopoly laws of the time. The company even controlled the distribution of telephone units themselves, as they were leased to the customer while AT&T retained ownership of the hardware.…

The development of the telecommunications market in the United Kingdom and the corporate strategy and development of the incumbent, British Telecom, represents an interesting object of analysis for several reasons. First, the UK telecommunications market was - along with the U.S. market - among the first telecommunications market that was deregulated in the early 1980s. Also some regulatory innovations, such as price cap regulation, were developed, and first implemented in telecommunications in the UK. Second, British Telecom was the first large incumbent in telecommunications that was privatised in the early 1980s. Third, competition in the UK telecommunications started gradually about ten years earlier than in most of the other European countries, and for a long period the UK market was, in number of competing companies at least, well ahead other European countries. However, competition evolved gradually, and had some country specific features that have affected the development of the telecommunications market, and particularly British Telecom.…

A generation ago, telecommunications markets around the world shared many characteristics. In most nations, there was a dominant telecommunications provider--AT&T in the United States, British Telecom in Britain, Deutsche Telekom in Germany, NTT in Japan, Telebras in Brazil, and so on. The provider was often state-owned, and even when it wasn't, its operations were tightly regulated by the state. Cross-border competition between telecommunications providers was all but nonexistent. Typically, regulations prohibited foreign firms from entering a country's telecommunications market and competing head-to-head with the domestic carrier. Most of the traffic carried by telecommunications firms was voice traffic, almost all of it was carried over copper wires, and most telecommunications firms charged their customers a hefty premium to make long-distance and international calls.…

The AT&T Corp., formerly known as the American Telephone and Telegraph Corporation, is as old as the telephone itself. The history of AT&T is in large measure the history of the telephone in the United States. AT&T's roots stretch back to 1875, with founder Alexander Graham Bell's invention of the telephone. During the 19th century, AT&T became the parent company of the Bell System, the American telephone monopoly. The Bell System provided what was by all accounts the best telephone service in the world. The system broke up into eight companies in 1984 by agreement between AT&T and the U.S. Department of Justice. From 1984 until 1996 AT&T was an integrated telecommunications services and equipment company, succeeding in a newly competitive environment.…

In the old days, the telecom industry was viewed as an example of “natural monopoly.” This was due to increasing returns to scale, where the telecom services could only be provided efficiently by a monopoly provider. In the U.S., this pattern started many years ago when the American Bell Telephone purchased the Western Electric Company of Chicago. Alexander Graham Bell patented the telephone in 1876 and formed Bell Telephone. AT&T, which is today one of the leading company in the wireless telecommunication industry, was formed in 1885 to connect the Bell Companies.…
