Network Diagram Description
Network ranges
PAN
One device could be a Bluetooth headset, and the other a phone or tablet The network covers the connection between two devices connected at a close range, using a standard such as Bluetooth.
LAN (Various other topologies) Example of a LAN with a star topology The network covers a small area, up to the size of a building. Home networks are LANs.
MAN (Various other topologies)
Two LANs connected to a central server in a bus-like configuration The network covers an entire town or city, for example several banking networks connected together.
WAN (Various other topologies) Three MANs in a mesh network The network covers a vast area, covering many towns and cities, …show more content…
Bus All devices are connected in a line.
Bus networks were used for LANs, but star networks are now used instead.
Internal car systems and airport systems are examples of networks that currently use a bus model.
Mesh and partial mesh
Mesh Partial mesh In a mesh, every device is connected to every other device, but in a partial mesh only a few computers have multiple connections.
Some Peer-to-Peer networks use a mesh structure, and some Client-Server networks use a partial mesh.
Tree All devices (or ‘nodes’) are connected in a hierarchy/tree-like structure.
The lower nodes can be LANs, making the whole network a WAN; tree networks are a common topology for a WAN.
Ring and token ring All devices are connected in a ring, and token ring also sends a token which says what computer is the intended recipient.
Email protocols have a somewhat similar topology to a ring network.
Ring networks were used for LANs, but star networks are now usually used instead.
Token ring is now completely obsolete and unused.
Why different network standards and protocols are necessary (P2)
A communication protocol is a set of rules that allow two or more devices to communicate, so they can send and receive …show more content…
Providing storage gives a company an advantage, as it is often more secure than employees managing their own files, and files already on a network can be easily shared.
Like most networks, the internet can be accessed through both Internet Explorer and Google Chrome. Being connected to the internet allows a company to easily send and receive information across the globe.
A lot of networks have an email service, which allows people to communicate with each other. For a company, this is an advantage because employees can share sensitive information privately within the network.
Our college also has shared printer access, because it means that anyone on the network can easily print documents without having to manually bring the file to the printer. This would give an advantage to accompany as it would be much more convenient for its employees.
