DNS Scenario

Dear junior IT,
Thank you for contacting me regarding your questions, and trust that I will do my best to help you. From what I understand, you work at two branch offices, and have been given the responsibility of discovering where to place an Active-Directory Integrated DNS server. You also have some question of what type DNS server would best meet your company’s needs.
First let’s begin with the smaller branch supporting perhaps five user/workstations, with an unusually slow network. The question with such a small branch isn’t really about what kind of DNS server you need, but do you need a DNS server at all. If there is a very high level of file/data sharing, then yes perhaps you could benefit from a server, but configured in a secondary zone, such as an ADI. However, if there is not enough file/data sharing to really warrant the presence of the server, an ADI server could potentially slow down an already sluggish system.

Now let’s move on to the second, much larger branch supporting around thirty users. You stated that this branch has a much better network connectivity than its smaller counterpart. In this case, I would recommend a DNS server set up in the primary zone. The primary zone is the primary source of information within this zone. I would also further suggest moving your servers from the smaller branch to your larger branch. All files from the smaller branch could be accessed via a “VPN” remote link. This would allow the smaller branch the ability to use a much smaller router, which might help with the lag the users have experienced.

Warmest Regards,

To add two new branch offices we will need to find a strategy to design a replication process. To implement this we will need to use inter-site replication. Inter-site replication is needed when adding domain controllers located in different sites. We will also need a site link (Site link is a logical, transitive connection between two sites that allows replication to occur) protocol of Remote Procedure Call (RPC) over Internet Protocol (IP) which is the preferred choice for the replication process. This allows you to communicate with network services on various computers and also keep data secure when being transmitted by using both encryption and authentication. We will need to take into consideration the cost, schedule, and frequency of the replication. It’s best to set the schedule for the site link during off-peak business hours to ensure the bandwidth is not bogged down on the WAN, due to replication traffic. Frequency will determine how often information is replicated over the site link. I think the best schedule/frequency for the replication would be every 6/hrs starting at 0600/daily.…

Part of managing a Windows Server 2003 network environment requires an administrator to be familiar with both of the different security models that can be implemented along with the roles that a server can hold. The two different security models used in Windows network environments are the workgroup model and the domain model. Please discuss in 500-600 words both options and explain why you would choose one over the other for your implementation.…

PAN, LAN, HAN, MAN or WAN –Given that the Little Country Store is a little secretly run organization, I would choose to setup a Local Area Network (LAN) for their framework designing. The LAN configuration is the best option for a productive Small Office/Home Office (SOHO) where periphery contraptions, for instance, printers and scanners may be bestowed to different PCs on the framework. Making usage of this preferred standpoint makes using a framework more calm than purchasing a printer for each individual PC. This LAN will have three PCs masterminded in a comparative building structure with a most extraordinary detachment of 200 feet between PCs.…

A simple design you can consider is 1 floor with a single data closet serving 150 users. You need a core network, networks for your firewall, DMZ, remote VPN clients, switch MGMT network, server network, voice network, wireless network and networks for other services you have not yet identified, like security, cameras, fire, door and video. You should have multiple domain servers and DHCP servers. While you can get away with using high end switches for DHCP, a couple windows servers will do the trick and give more insight when you are troubleshooting. Most systems can get along with DHCP, so that is fine, (some older systems still need host files) but there are support benefits to statically assigned addresses. In any case, you will want reserved space in these networks for your network devices, in exception to VLANs, redundant or clustered systems. For design, you could use the 10.1.0.0 address space using /21 (10.1.0.1 - 10.1.7.254) and for your subnet masking on the devices will naturally be 255.255.255. Reserve the first and last 20 or so addresses in each DHCP scope for statically assigned addresses and network devices / gateway addresses. Some examples would be, 10.1.0.0/24 for servers-all static, 10.1.1.0/24 for pc's printers usable for DHCP 10.1.1.21 - 10.1.1.230, 10.1.2.0/24 for wireless usable for DHCP 10.1.2.21-10.1.2.230, 10.1.3.0/24 for VoIP usable for DHCP 10.1.3.21 - 10.1.3.230 and 10.1.4.0 - 10.1.7.254 for future use. While you can cut back each network to a /25 giving 126 hosts per network, you may find yourself changing this sooner than expected.…

What can you do to benefit the server: Starting off, I would take care of the chat for the server so that the environment is family friendly. Later on, I would attempt to deal with more blatant rule breakers such as hackers and or people whom abuse glitches or bugs to take advantage of anything. If anyone breaks the rules with the exception of hackers (instantly taken action against) I will first give them a verbal warning so they know they shouldn't repeat what they just did. If did again, either action or another verbal warning will be issued but the third time will call for immediate action. Considering the timezones, I can catch the more 'blatant' rule breakers whom could be ruining the experiences of players in my timezone where other staff aren't online or…
