NT 1330
Unit 5 Exercise 1
To: Junior Admin
The FSMO roles were assigned to one or more DCs during the DCPROMO process. The Schema and Domain Naming roles are located in the first DC in the first domain in the forest (i.e. the Forest Root Domain). The RID, PDC Emulator and Infrastructure roles are located in the first DC in a domain (any domain, including the Forest Root Domain, any Tree Root Domain, or any Child Domain).
To determine whether a domain controller is a global catalog server
1. Open Active Directory Sites and Services.
2. In the console tree, expand the Sites container, expand the site of the domain controller you want to check, expand the Servers container, and then expand the Serverobject.
3. Right-click the NTDS Settings …show more content…
object, and then click Properties.
4. On the General tab, if the Global Catalog box is selected, the domain controller is designated as a global catalog server.
Transferring the Schema Master:
You can use this procedure to transfer the schema operations master role if the domain controller that currently hosts the role is inadequate, has failed, or is being decommissioned.
The schema master is a forest-wide operations master (also known as flexible single master operations or FSMO) role.
Before you perform this procedure, you must identify the domain controller to which you will transfer the schema operations master role.
Before you can use the Active Directory Schema snap-in for the first time, you must register it with the system.
1. Open the Active Directory Schema snap-in.
2. In the console tree, right-click Active Directory Schema, and then click Change Active Directory Domain Controller.
3. In the Change Directory Server dialog box, under Change to, click This domain Controller or AD LDS instance.
4. In the list of domain controllers, click the name of the domain controller to which you want to transfer the schema master role, and then click OK.
5. In the console tree, right-click Active Directory Schema, and then click Operations Master. The Change Schema Master box displays the name of the server that is currently holding the schema master role. The targeted domain controller is listed in the second
box.
6. Click Change. Click Yes to confirm your choice. The system confirms the operation. Click OK again to confirm that the operation succeeded.
7. Click Close to close the Change Schema Master dialog box.
The dcdiag: Analyzes the state of domain controllers in a forest or enterprise and reports any problems to help in troubleshooting.
As an end-user reporting program, dcdiag is a command-line tool that encapsulates detailed knowledge of how to identify abnormal behavior in the system. Dcdiag displays command output at the command prompt.
Dcdiag consists of a framework for executing tests and a series of tests to verify different functional areas of the system. This framework selects which domain controllers are tested according to scope directives from the user, such as enterprise, site, or single server.
Dcdiag is built into Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows Server 2008. It is available if you have the Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) or Active Directory Lightweight Directory Services (AD LDS) server role installed. It is also available if you install the Active Directory Domain Services Tools that are part of the Remote Server Administration Tools (RSAT).
This should help you with all of the questions that you had. If you have any further questions or run into any problems, feel free to send me another email.
