After reading the article on Nuclear power industry feels the wind at its back by Barbara Wall. I realize that it was mainly focused on the environment and high-energy prices. Aft
First of all I wanted to learn more about the environment effects, and I found out that the Nuclear Power has huge effect on the environment. For example the article mention the nuclear accident that happened in Ukraine on April 26, 1986. Millions of Europeans were affected by this explosion and fire that released large amount of radioactive particles into the continental Europe. In this particular case I found out that Nuclear Reactors job is to create and generate a substantial amount of residual decay heat. During this process reactor needs to cool down to avoid core damage. If in the event of power grid failure, then generators are supposed to kick in and fix the problem, but in this scenario generators did not kick in, and it caused a nuclear accident. I also read an article on greenpeace web site that mention that Nuclear power is neither safe nor clean. There is no such thing as a "safe" dose of radiation and just because nuclear pollution is invisible doesn't mean it's "clean."
Secondly after reading this article I decided to read more about the financial effect the Nuclear Power has around the world. I realize that it had an even bigger effect on us, because researchers mentions that the most of the non-OECD (Organization for Economics Cooperation and Development) member countries desire nuclear energy do to their population growth and energy demand. For example; India and China both consume 10% of world energy and the article also talked about the 30 power reactors are currently being constructed in 11 countries notably China, Japan and South Korea, according to the Nuclear Energy Institute, based in New York. Another reason why developing countries are interested on nuclear energy is the effect that oil prices will remain at a high level.
