Global warming is a gradual increase in the overall temperature of the Earth’s atmosphere, creating the greenhouse effect, caused by the increased of Carbon dioxide, Chlorofluorocarbons, and pollutants that was made by us humans. For centuries, the argument of Global warming has been about it being a myth or a fact, but scientist today has proved the existent of Global warming and there is no way to stop it. The one and only thing we human can do is to slow Global warming down. Many argues that Nuclear Power is a near perfect substituted in the place of burning fossil fuels because Nuclear Power does not create nearly as much Carbon dioxide, while others argues that the government have no actual plan for Nuclear Power Plant, and even if they did, the Nuclear Power Plant would be a massive target for terrorist attack. As the argument rages on, one might think that ‘Is Nuclear Power really the solution to Global Warming, or the actual solution is completely something else’. It is believe
that Nuclear power are consider a more desirable as an energy source than fossil fuels due to that of fission, the main process in creating Nuclear power. Through science, it is explain that, there is a massive release of energy when an atom is split into two, where the energy can be used to power an electro generator, which uses less materials and generate more energy than fossil fuel could ever generate while using one hundred times the recourses it needed. In Issues & Controversies (2010), it stated that if a person burn around one kilogram of wood (2.2 pounds), it would create around 1 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of power, burning one kilo of coal would crate 3 kWh of power, and burning oil would create 4 kWh of power, but when burning only one kilo of uranium, it would create an amazing amount of around 50,000 kWh of power. Uranium not only take so little to burn for the massive amount of energy, but it also produce so much less of the greenhouse gas that is causing an alarmingly increase the rate of Global warming in our planet. Although Nuclear power generate more energy and less carbon dioxide than coal and oil, many argue that burning uranium will do more harm than good to the environment in the distance future. Nuclear waste are the remains of burning uranium to create Nuclear power. It has been proven that nuclear waste are dangerously radioactive and could last up to thousands of years. According to Senator Harry Reid from Issues & Controversies (2010) “A speck [of nuclear waste] the size of a pinpoint would kill a person…. And we’re talking about transporting some 70,000 tons of it across America.” Based on the information on Nuclear Energy Institute Knowledge Center (2008), an average nuclear power plant generate about 20 metric tons of used nuclear fuel a year and an industry generates a around 2,000 – 2,3000 metric tons of used fuel per years. To be able to generate that much of nuclear waste in one year, in the time of World War 2 and today, there are over 100 thousand metric tons of nuclear waste in the world, and the number will keep adding up due to the fact that nuclear waste will not disappear for thousands of years. It is a known fact that nuclear power plant generate a massive amount of nuclear waste, but if it does not get into the inhabit area then it shouldn’t be a problem. If one are comparing the effect of the problem of nuclear waste and the greenhouse effect on the people, then the greenhouse effect win the prize. Every day we read about gas explosions, car fires, and many other accidents in which fossil fuels were at least contributors. We hardly notice the deaths from cancer and lung disease caused by pollutants from burning fossil fuels.
The problem that are represented today are trying to saves the lives of the humans that are dying to the cause of burning fossil fuels. Over the past decades, there has been more death count from pollutant than from nuclear waste, and that is including the death from dropping the atomic bomb in Hiroshima, Japan. Even though the death count much higher than nuclear waste right now, there is a high percentage that the death count due to nuclear waste will increase drastically in the
future. In the 21st century, the technology right now are not advanced enough to where we have the perfect answer to decrease the rate of global warming, while having no negative effect along the way. The best solution we have now is nuclear power, even though it has many effect that could and will harm us in the distance future, it could saves a lot of lives right now. Nuclear power doesn’t have to a permanent substitution to fossil fuel, it could be temporary solution until we can figured a way to manipulate wind and solar power effectively to the point of where it will have no negative effect against the habitant of the planet. We human have to adapt and survive in extreme condition, to use what is available to us in order to pro-long the human race and the place they are inhabiting, Earth, even if it is an temporary solution, it’s the best solution we have right now.
