In addition to the reduction in weapons, the number of countries which were developing, had developed or were seriously discussing nuclear programs has dropped since the 1980’s. This was due to a combination of factors that still determine such decisions today, including security, expense, need for status or prestige, internal politics and other factors.…

Many people around the world ask themselves what are the disadvantages of adopting an alternative solution to solve the consumption of global nuclear energy? Based on what we have experienced through events with major disasters and the aftermath of many casualties, it has summed up to result in having failures outgrowing expectations. Therefore, global nuclear power usage is to be opposed due to the fact that it comes with high financial costs, nuclear waste management complications, and the fact that thousands in populations are mass numbers of casualties.…

I agree with the nuclear optimists that nuclear proliferation will make international politics more stable and less war prone. Since nuclear weapons are classified as weapons of mass destruction (WMDs), more specifically as true WMD (Baylis pg 386), I believe states that possess nuclear weapons will be reluctant to use them against states who also possess nuclear weapons, out of the fear those state will retaliate with their own nuclear weapons. The use of nuclear weapons poses risk to a state that chooses to use a nuclear weapon against another nuclear proliferated state. Therefore, by this logic it benefits to a state to be nuclear proliferated as a defensive precaution or a deterrence mechanism.…

A nuclear weapon is a weapon that gets it’s destructive power by turning matter into energy. All nuclear weapons are explosives(usually missiles). They can be transported by missiles, bombs, tank shells, mines, or torpedoes. The most destructive nuclear weapons are far more poweful than any conventional(non nuclear) weapon. A nuclear weapon used in a large city could kill millions of people. A large nuclear war could devastate the Earth’s climate and ability to support life(a.k.a nuclear winter).…

    Iran's Nuclear Program

“Now I am become death, the destroyer of worlds,” (Oppenheimer, 1965, 0:47). So said Julius Robert Oppenheimer, one of the men credited with creating the atomic bomb, when describing the first test detonation of a nuclear weapon on July 16, 1945, at the Alamogordo Bomb Range in New Mexico ( Sublette, 1999), as he quotes the Hindu holy text, the Bhagavad Vita. Nuclear weapons have only been used in warfare twice, both times by the United States during World War I, when the United States dropped the ‘Fat Man’ and ‘Little Boy’ bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August, 1945 (Sublette, 1999). In the 60 intervening years, a number of other nations have since developed nuclear weapons of their own. Because of nuclear proliferation, and the unparalleled destructive power of atomic weapons, nuclear non-proliferation has become an international concern, with the United States leading the charge. The past decade, however, has seen new nations try to enter the ‘nuclear club’ the most recent country being Iran. A nuclear armed Iran poses many concerns to the United States. In this paper, I will discuss the history of Iran’s nuclear program, what steps have been taken to curb the Iranians efforts, and where the two major political parties of the United States stand on the issue.…

August 6th, 1945, the US drops the first nuclear bomb in combat over the city of Hiroshima, in Japan. This date is a huge part in our history because no weapon of such mass destruction has ever been used in combat like this. Three days later another nuclear bomb is dropped over Nagasaki, as soon as the bomb detonated around 80,000 people died almost instantly showing the sheer power the bomb. A nuclear bomb has never been used in combat since then, but nuclear development has created a lot of tension within the worlds super powers, and that tension is still building up to this day.…

The question of whether countries should have nuclear weapons or be able to test them is a very controversial topic among the public. "A nuclear weapon is an explosive device that derives its destructive force from nuclear reactions, either fission or a combination of fission and fusion." (Vicky: "Nuclear Weapon"). The destructive atomic bomb is an example of a nuclear weapon. The United States used the atomic bomb to destroy the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan in 1885, which killed nearly 250,000 people and virtually ended World War II. There are also other nuclear weapons that are used and tested by several other militaries around the world. Since the atomic bombs hit Japan in 1885, two thousand nuclear weapons have been detonated for testing purposes. If nuclear weapons are so destructive, then why are they being used in the military or even on innocent people? Nuclear weapons should be banned to insure safety and peace within our planet.…

Albert Einstein once said, “I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones[,]”(Brainyquote). Given that Albert Einstein worked on the Manhattan Project he knew what he was saying. Especially since he knew the destructive force of the weapon he helped create. Although it was not the first, the atomic bomb was a weapon that the world had never seen before. With the ability to wipe out an area in seconds and leave that said area in shambles for years later. This power gave the atomic bomb the title of a weapon of mass destruction. Even though they are one of the newest threats to the world; weapons of mass destruction are the most dangerous and versatile weapons. With many types…
