Number the Stars

Annemarie is the bravest girl I’ve ever known of. She is extremely clever for a ten year old. She is compassionate and loving toward others. She is very naïve; she needs to prepare herself when she faces the worst. She appeals to me because she reminds me of my niece. All in all, she is an inspiring character. Annemarie is extremely clever for a ten year old. Annemarie takes Ellen’s Star of David necklace before the soldiers find it and arrest her. When her mother tells her that her great Aunt Birte died, Annemarie knows that there’s no Aunt Birte. Annemarie decides to take the closed, concealed road to the woods instead of the open, view road. These are all wise decisions for a ten year old. Annemarie is very loving and compassionate toward others. She cares for her best friend Ellen. She risks her life for her. Annemarie also would do anything for her family, especially Kristi. She is a good person. All in all, Annemarie couldn’t be better! One of Annemarie’s weaknesses is that of being naïve and fearful. One example, Annemarie doesn’t know what’s happening to the Jews. She is also fearful when she confronts the Nazis. An other example that shows she is fearful is when she is running with her best friend Ellen and is stopped by some Nazis. Even though Annemarie is very naïve and fearful she still is a powerful character. In conclusion. I liked the main character of Number The Stars because she is a smart, brave, imaginative and interesting girl. Annemarie, the main character is a fun character. She is also compassionate and loving toward others. However, Annemarie is very naïve. In addition, I liked how she remained resolute. As you can see, Annemarie is an interesting

Ellen Rosen demonstrates her courage in a number of instances throughout the novel. The Jews are being hunted down and “relocated” by the Nazis, thus Ellen is required to leave. Instead, Ellen leaves the comfort of her family to reside with Johansens, the only safe alternative for her to take. However, this did not make it any easier for the mere frightened 10 year old. It took great courage to pretend to be Annemarie’s dead sister, Lise, especially so when suspicious Nazi soldiers flug question after question at her regarding her true…

Mary Anne is portrayed as the best woman in the book. She is only seventeen and her high school sweetheart, Mark Fossie, arranges it so that she comes to stay with him for a while in Vietnam. When she first gets there she distracts the boys, which make them feel more at home. "The men genuinely liked her. Out on the volleyball court she wore cut-off blue jeans and a black swimsuit top, which the guys appreciated, and in the evenings she liked to dance to music from Rat's portable tape deck" (95). At first she is happy with mark, however over time she changes and it shows her becoming a woman and really maturing. "In her second week Eddie Diamond taught her how to disassemble an M-16, how the various parts worked, and from there it was a natural progression to learning how to use the weapon" (98). As the story goes on it shows that she is becoming more of a soldier. She in the end acted very differently than most women, this for women was a positive thing because it is giving her power, and a new look on life. This can be negative as well because Mark Fossie lost the girl he once loved. Her image continues to become more negative, once Mary Anne goes crazy and starts sleeping with the greenies. She becomes one of them when, she starts wearing tongue necklaces and listens to dark music. You just begin to see how she can't handle the war without going mad.…

Anne writes about the changes she begins seeing in herself. On Saturday, March 25, 1944, Anne wrote “You never realize how much you have changed until after it’s happened. I have changed quite drastically, everything about me is different: my opinions, ideas, critical outlook. Inwardly, outwardly, nothing is the same. And, I might safely add, since It is true, I have changed for the better” (234). Here, Anne indicates that change can be a good thing. Often people see change as a negative, but Anne deals with it in a positive manner. Although everything going on around her seems to be going downhill, Anne finds the courage to change herself for the better. Anne Frank was always accountable for herself and her actions. On Saturday, July 15, 1944, Anne said “I have a great deal of self-knowledge. In everything I do, I can watch myself as if I were a stranger. I can stand across from the everyday Anne and, without being biased or making excuses, watch what she is doing, both the good and the bad. This self-awareness never leaves me, and every time I open my mouth, I think ‘you should have said that differently’ or ‘that is fine the way it is’ (325). Anne Frank never made excuses or blamed other people for her problems or actions. She took responsibility for her faults and made a vow to change them. Anne’s questioning herself is a method of self-evaluation, which serves, once again, to make herself a better person.…

The Allies have landed in Africa. Pim says that we can look for an early finish to the war. Just for fun he asked each of us what was the first thing we wanted to do when we got out of here. For myself, there are so many things... to ride a bike again... to laugh till my belly aches... to have new clothes from the skin out... to have a hot tub filled to overflowing and wallow in it for hours... to be back in school with my friends.” This proves that Anne was very hopeful for a good outcome.
