When I was younger being, a veterinarian was my dream, I would always try to learn something new about a specific animal, but as most high school age people want to socialize then actually be in …show more content…
a classroom I was always talking about what I want to do as a career, but my grades were never good enough to get into the veterinarian school I wanted to. As it got closer to graduate high school I realized I need to figure something out. The best thing I could think of that would be closer to helping people would be a nurse and that was the start of it once I thought about it my vision became reality as I began my journey into college.
When I was 16 or 17 years old I was having these major sharp chest pain trouble breathing when I would have these chest pains to the point I couldn’t move I just wanted to lay down and cry and not talk to anyone. I told my mom about them and she just brushed it off at first and told me “it is from those darn energy drinks you are always drinking” so I stopped drinking energy drinks. A couple of months went by, I was still having trouble my mom finally took me to the doctor when she realized I was being serious and not trying to get out of school. After many test from the emergency room they suggested I go to a cardiologist in Wilmington NC New Hanover Reginal Medical Center. Four doctor visits a twenty-four-hour EKG machine that I had to wear, and one lovely nurse who happened to be taking my vitals that day was listening to my heart and she told me that my heart skipped a beat slightly. OK when you tell a 16-year-old girl her heart skipped a beat yeah, she is going to freak out a little bit. she told me not to be alarmed that it could be her mistake and she would go get a second opinion just to make sure, but when the cardiologist confirmed the nurse’s theory and they explained to me what has been going on I felt so much better. The multiple nurses who were there to help me with my multiple doctor’s visit helped me make my final decision on becoming a nurse. How the nurses spoke to me and helped me be more relaxed at being at a hospital, the nurses would always come in the room and joke about how I made my symptoms sound like I was an 80-year-old, they would call me old lady. They would explain to me what procedure they were getting ready to do and to not be worried witch would make me much more relived when they would say stuff I didn’t quite understand. I couldn’t tell you what I was more excited about the fact that I figured out what I wanted to be or the fact that I finally figured out what was the cause of my health issues.
As the issue of school came to an end and the whole future subject came up again I told everyone what I wanted to do the reactions were more shocked and surprising, “what made you change your mind?” said my family after I explained to them what made me want to become a nurse. They realized that I was serious and they became supportive of my dreams and the search for colleges were on in full swing. “you will always have a job; the healthcare field is always a fast-growing career field” said everyone I told.
At first I wanted to go to miller motte technical college, then I wanted to go to cape fear community college and then there was the thinking of going to UNCW but I despise Wilmington traffic with a passion.
Miller motte does not do transfers and transferring to a four year college was something I wanted to do at first, I actually had a full ride scholarship to miller motte technical college, I was really excited I thought this was it the parts where my dreams come true for once, but as I was talking to a family friend about the subject she was telling me that I should do some research about the college because she didn’t know about that program as I was doing some research I found out some of the classes I had to take twice just to do what I wanted to do at have enough credits. Cape Fear community college and UNCW was my next option but I didn’t do any research on them because the thought of me having to move to Wilmington just to go to the school I couldn’t see come into light, personal issues became too much and the best option for my situation would stay closer to home and go to Brunswick Community College, I read into the nursing program at BCC it is such a great program and it just makes life a lot easier that I can do my prerequisites and the nursing program all at one place at my own pace and work school around my work schedule. BCC nursing program is a fast-growing program with lots of rewarding classes to help you with the future. “Employment opportunities are vast within the global health care system and may include positions within acute, chronic, extended, industrial, and community health care facilities” (Brunswick community college, nursing and allied health). the programs help you grow into the world around you as you dive into the
program.
Nursing was not always a popular profession but Florence nightingale helped revolutionize the profession with how she educated on the proper hygiene care, holistic approach to nursing, caring for the person not just their illness or disability. “In late 1854, Nightingale received a letter from secretary of war Sidney Herbert, asking her to organize corps of nurses to tend to the sick and fallen soldiers in Crima” (Biography.com). Nothing could help them prepare to the conditions of the hospital she was determined to take care of the ill and make changes to the healthcare. In many ways, she helped me and many others choose the nursing field just by how she was caring and compassionate to patients and was willing to help them no matter what. As I dove further into this path of going into the nursing profession I was inspired by how people like Nightingale helped mold the nursing field, helping the sick and disabled, I also hope to help people like they did.
Nursing is hard, rewarding back breaking work. It is all worth it when you know you made a difference in someone’s life and helped them feel better about being sick. “Employment of registered nurses is projected to grow 19 percent from 2012 to 2022, faster than the average for all occupations, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.”(international). Nurses are in such a high demand due to “baby boomers” growing older and people are getting sick. “Nurses also serve as advocates for patients, families and communities. They develop and manage nursing care plans, instruct patients and their families in proper care and help individuals and groups take steps to improve or maintain their health” (international). learning more about what a registered nurse does and how it involved more work and focus makes me even more determined to become a nurse to help people and make them better. “Registered nurses usually take one of three education paths: a bachelor’s degree in nursing, an associate’s degree in nursing, or a diploma from an approved nursing program. Registered nurses also must be licensed.” (“Registered Nurses: Occupational Outlook Handbook: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics”) My goal is to get my associates degree and work my way up I want to be a critical care nurse or maybe a neonatal nurse who works with infants who are premature or who are born with birth defects. I hope to get further into my education and nursing career I don’t know what it is going to take me exactly but I am excited to see where it is going to take me. “Approximately 40,000 low-birth-weight infants are born annually in the United States. Because of significant medical advances and the efforts of physicians and nurses who provide for very vulnerable babies, survival rates are 10 times better now than they were 15 years ago,”(“What Is Neonatal Nursing”). My nephew was born with three birth defects, spinal bifida, which is when the spinal cord fails to develop properly, he had surgery in utero to correct the issue but it was a high-risk situation, with that being the case my nephew is now paralyzed from the waist down. He was also born with hydrocephalus which is a buildup of fluid on the brain and he was also born with clubbed feet he was born 12 weeks early and stayed in the hospital for three months. As I visited this sweet boy in the hospital I was inspired by the nurses who took care of him “rest easy now” they would tell us “he is in good hands he is a strong boy” which made all of us feel a thousand times better and made me be more into learning about the profession. My nephew is now 3 and he is about the smartest happiest little boy you could ever meet you would never guess he was born premature. He is also my inspiration in being a nurse with his health issues.
In conclusion, my decision of being a registered nurse is probably one of the many chooses I am proud of. With the nurses being my inspiration. Figuring out what school would be the best choose at the time, I hope to learn and grow into the best nurse I can be. I also hope to help people realize that they do not have to go through their illness on their own they have people there to help in their time of need. I hope I can inspire someone in the future to become a nurse or not only that follow their dreams.
