A naturally outgoing approachable individual I am often the person friends and family come to for help and advice. I have always been hardworking and evermore so after starting up my own personal training and fitness classes in 2014 which took much courage on my part. Running my own business highlighted my natural qualities of being punctual and trustworthy, clients would often approach me for help and would always trust and appreciate my advice, qualities I hope will shine in my role as a nurse.
Running my own fitness classes for the past two years, I have become a highly organised, committed individual, during this time I have also developed excellent communication skills and am always professional in my approach, these skills are now invaluable and ones that will make me the best nurse I can be and after running a home and business I have become adaptable and open to new situations and it’s shown me the importance of planning.

2008 I was placed at Hemel Hempstead Hospital for work experience. The nurses allowed me to be fairly hands on with the patients and I gained some invaluable experience in the hospital environment. I took away with me, the importance of patient care and what it meant to be a good nurse. This experience left me wanting to learn more and lead to my job as an auxiliary nurse 2 years later. As an auxiliary nurse I worked as part of a multi-disciplinary team communicating with doctors, nurses, physiotherapists and other staff members caring for a diverse range of patients. I quickly become very competent at my job and always showed the greatest compassion to all the patients during their time on the ward. My experience as a health care assistant was sometimes challenging yet always fulfilling, it’s given me a range of skills which I look forward to building on during my time at university. for the past 4 months I have been caring for my disabled niece Sienna on a weekly basis providing respite care, born with a severe form of epilepsy known as West Syndrome Sienna suffers daily seizures. Caring for Sienna has meant using my initiative as well as demonstrating competence and calmness in difficult situations attributes I can carry forward to nursing.
In 2015 I began an Access to Nursing and maths GCSE course. Returning to education as a mature student has been an amazing experience, and reignited my passion for knowledge. I learnt quickly the art of time management, meeting deadlines and the resources needed to provide good quality pieces of work, work that’s to date earned me distinctions. The subject I have most enjoyed is Human Biology in particular learning about the body systems and how certain conditions such as diabetes affect a person’s body and health, knowledge that is vital in the role of nursing and at university I look forward to learning more about this.
In order to qualify to teach fitness to both adults and children I was required to research the human body and the major differences between the adult and child body and the conditions that can affect them at different stages of life as part of this qualification I attended an optional safeguarding course to make sure I followed correct protocol, knowledge I can now carry forward.
Learning about the differences between adults and children and the interest I have in human biology and the physical body and disease helped me to choose adult nursing, I feel adult nursing has so many dimensions and will be the best option to take in order to reach my ultimate goal of trauma
nursing.
I fully understand the sacrifices I’ll have to make and challenges I will face in nursing having already encountered many of these in my previous roles I’m aware that my ability to organise, work shifts, handle stressful situations, show compassion, empathy, competence and support to a range of patients will be tested to the limit but if I can be known as the nurse who really cared then for me being that nurse is worth it all. I am looking forward to the future and starting university.
