What Is Informatics?
Informatics studies the relationship that technology plays in a giving area, such as nursing. With healthcare/ nursing informatics, a combination of sciences are used to effectively gather information in nursing practice and in return provide patients with a greater quality of care and safety. Everyday new technology is being presented that affects different areas such as the healthcare field. Electronic charting is one area where technology has been useful. Computer charting reduces patient error, increases the safety of patients and allows the nurse to spend more time with the patient and less time in documentation. Examples of informatics in a clinical practice include the electronic medical record, devices that automatically upload vital signs and other measurements after they have been taken, computer generated nursing care plans for patients, bar code scanning of products used to treat and take care of patients. Received emails, online staff scheduling, analysis for budgeting and quality assurance would be examples of nursing administration informatics. Informatics concerning nursing education include distance learning programs, videos that allow for interaction, computerized assisted instruction and record keeping, online continual education credits, and software such as Microsoft and PowerPoint. Informatics in nursing research include implementation of easy to understand language relating to nursing terms. Other forms of informatics include: data recovery, ethics, patient care, decision support systems, information systems, imaging informatics, e-learning, telenursing, and electronic patient
Health informatics has improved the quality of care and provided greater safety to patients. It has giving providers a better view of a patient’s total health. Health informatics has also provided a way for patient’s to get involved in their health. With access to patient portals, patients can view the doctor’s recommendation right from their comfort of their homes. Public health informatics allows for researchers to view situations from a larger point of view.
