My clinical question is: What are effective nursing interventions in children to promote physical fitness?

This randomized control trial presenting level two evidence consisted of 251 children ranging from 8 to 12 years olds from low income neighborhoods in Los Angeles. The children participated in a six week program that met weekly, consisting of a 45 minutes of physical exercise and 45 minutes of nutrition education. This study showed that nurses providing a physical fitness program for the children helped to improve both genders overall health and increase daily physical activity. A prominent limitation for the study is the sample being predominantly Hispanic and Latino which does not generalize well to other races or ethnicities. The study helped to highlight the differences in each genders experience with physical fitness which is a strength in that it may help to develop more effective physical activity promotion that is gender specific.
Critique: This study provides reliable information about children’s responses to a nurse driven physical fitness intervention that is independent of school PE. This will help to further support the idea of an after school physical fitness program.

There were 39 obese children who participated in this study that falls under level 5 evidence on the pyramid. The study sought to discover if an obese child felt the same, as far as self-esteem and physiologic state, as an overweight child. The study was done to help nurses discover effective interventions for obese and overweight children. The findings indicated that in fact obese and overweight children have the same feelings in both of the afore mentioned categories and the study also determined that positive reinforcement of the children helped them to have positive outlooks themselves. A weakness of the study is that the sample size is small so it is difficult to generalize it to an entire population. The study has originality in that the nurses assessment is the basis for graded and targeted
