Nursing Observation And Analysis

I was compiling the patient’s time planner for the last shift of my practicum and ended up being allocated to the same patients, as two newly placed enrolled nursing students. Throughout the shift, I assisted in orientating the students to the hospital ward procedures. This included, teaching the students how to write up a time planner as required by the ward, for each shift. Going through each patient’s file, medication chart and handover notes, I established what information we required and transcribed it on the planner. Explaining, that it enabled us as nurses, to create a picture of the care required for the patient, on that shift. That the written time planner, facilitated timely nursing interventions and established a safe environment
for the patients. It also co-ordinated a team setting, working with each other, organising nursing care and communicating nursing assessments of the patient’s care given. I explained that time planners were an organisational tool to use, but not to rely on as your only nursing care reference. After planning the care for the ten patients, the enrolled nurses thanked me for showing them this layout, commenting that the organiser really helped to recognise patient’s needs and prioritise their care. I also demonstrated at the end of the shift, how it assisted in prompting/reminding in writing the patients handover notes. At the end of the shift my mentor supervisor thanked me for educating the new enrolled nursing students, saying that he appreciated the extra commitment to facilitating patients care.
