Nursing Reflection

Jim is a 63 year old man who lives in Bury which is a small town in Greater Manchester he has lived here since he was born. Jim was born into a working class family and is the oldest of 5 siblings. He left his local comprehensive school at 16 and became a builder, he has been self employed since he was 25 and retired 5 years ago allthough he carried on doing odd jobs until his recent illness. Jim was diagnosed with lung cancer 6 months ago, he had previously suffered with bronchitis and asthma, he has been told his cancer is most likely due to his smoking habit which he began at 14 and still smokes up to 30 cigarettes a day. Since his diagnosis Jim has remained quite positive despite him being told that his cancer is terminal and he may have just months to live.

Bury is a fairly middle class society with significantly less deprivation compared to the rest of England it has a good standard of education with pupils achieving GCSE marks well above the national average however 24.4% of adults smoke in Bury and this is significantly worse than the national average of 21.2%.(Source: Department of Health. © Crown Copyright 2011’.
