Studies show that one in every 12 young people engages in self-harm. However, individuals with developmental disabilities are more vulnerable compared to children without these disabilities. Healthcare practitioners agree that studying self-harm among children with disabilities would provide the much-needed changes in care approaches for patients.
Moreover, the study of this problem would provide a healthcare practitioner with an understanding of the reasons for self-injury among youth and children to come up with the best treatment interventions. Nurses are presented with the dilemma of facilitating healing through careful comprehension and creation of learning outcomes from the patients’ experiences.
Patients would want to walk without supervision but since a healthcare practitioner wishes to promote independence, the risk of self-harm due to mental disabilities may be great. Therefore, a nurse is faced with the dilemma of preserving and balancing these two contrasting issues. As such, research on self-harm amongst youth and children may provide nurses with the right technologies to survive mental illnesses while averting self-injuries in addition to implementing clinical and educational practices addressing the issues.
