Module 2: Nursing Theory Development, Analysis & Evaluation

1) What is the relationship between: Methatheory deals with the processes of generating knowledge and debating broad issues related to the nature of theory, types of theory needed, and suitable criteria for theory evaluation. Metatheory -refers to the phiosophical and methodologic questions related to developing a theroretical base for nursing. Gran Theory - Grand theories are thef conceptional frameworks of broad perspesctives and ways of looking at nursing phenomena and practice. Middle range Theory - Middle range theories cover such concepts a pain, symptom management, cultural issues and health promotion.
Contain limited numbers of concepts and are limited in scope. Practice Theory - These activities are here to achieve this goal. The essence of practice theory is a defined or prescriptions or modalities for practice for interventions
2) . Briefly Summarize the components of a theory - the purpose of a theory explains why the theory was formulated and specifies the context and situations in which it should be applied.
Circumstances that influenced its creation, the theorist's past experiences, settings in which the theory was formulated, and social trend concept of development- This purpose might also provide information about the sociopolitical context in which the theory was developed,
3) After reading the recommendations of various nurse scholars for analysis of theory, comment of usefulness of the synthesized method for theory evaluation - (Box 5-3 on page 101 in McEwin & Willis)
Theory evaluations identifies a theory's degree of usefulness to guide practice, research, education, and administration. Such evaluation gives insight into relationships among concepts and their linkages to each other and to allows the reviewer to determine the strengths and weakness of a theory.
The methods or techniques were developed and used almost exclusively

    Imogene King was the developer of both a Conceptual Framework and a Goal Attainment theory. The Goal Attainment theory is a middle-range theory that originated from the Conceptual System. The primary concepts of Goal Attainment theory are perception, communication, interaction, self role, grow and development, stress, and time and space (Frey, Sieloff & Norris, 2002). The main point of Goal Attainment theory is that the nurse and the patient work together to define and reach goals that they set together (Killeen & King, 2007).     At the beginning of this class, I had very little understanding of the way theory and nursing research are related. I knew nursing research was useful for practice, and I had had much experience with finding and analyzing nursing research. However, I was having a hard time making the connection between theory and its usefulness in practice. The presentation by Lori Loan really helped me to make some of those crucial connections between theory and research. The most useful thing I learned from Lori was how to use theory as a framework to build and organize research. Research questions can be extremely complex, and it is hard to know how to organize all of the variables involved. I learned in this class that theory provides a mold into which one can fit data. In this way, theory guides research, and research guides practice. Since some theories predict, you can test a hypothesis with more certainty that it will be confirmed and therefore waste less time and resources on research. Another important thing I learned from Lori is that you don’t have to reinvent the wheel when it comes to research. Science is continually building a body of knowledge, and you can use work that someone else has already done, to make sense of your own research questions or to clarify which questions you should be asking.…
