A person’s diet is the food they regularly consume, for example a high fibre diet contains a lot of fruit and vegetables. A nutrient is anything that nourishes a human or animal for example iron is a nutrient if someone is a vegetarian they don’t get a lot of iron so they have to take iron supplement tablets. A meal is a fairly large portion of food that is served and eaten for example a roast dinner which contains vegetables, meat and potatoes. A snack is a small amount of food eaten in between meals for example a sandwich. Malnutrition is caused by people having to many or too little nutrients, this can cause poor wound healing, fatigue and organ failure. Over nutrition is where you take in too many nutrients, this affects energy balance and leads to obesity. It also affects health, for example high intakes of salt are linked to high blood pressure. Under nutrition means not getting enough nutrients and can lead to starvation, mirasmus and kwashikor. My client is a nineteen year old female who is of average height and weight. My client has a volunteer job, which consists of going shopping for elderly people who are or feel unable to leave the house to collect their own groceries or anything else they need for example my client will go to the house of a service user and collect a list they have compiled of what they need from the shop and my client will go and collect it. She will also pay any bills in the post office, post any letters or cards needed and also get gas and/or electric. My client also has a part time job on a saturday night where she collects and cleans glasses from the pub. My client works 10pm until closing time which is usually around 12-1am. My client also attends college monday to thursday, where she leaves her house at 7am to walk to the bus stop to catch the college bus and returns home at 5:30pm. My client enjoys walking her dog to the local park every evening for about an hour/an hour and a half in order to have exercise and try to unwind after college. When my client returns home, her mother who is a home carer for people who suffer from mental health disorders and have learning difficulties and/or other disabilities, is usually at work therefore my client is responsible for making her own tea which usually consists of something easy from the freezer such as pizza, chips, chicken nuggets or fish fingers with peas or baked beans. My client does not have a varied diet and therefore has a deficiency for a number of vitamins and minerals. My client also suffers from a condition called IBS or Irritable Bowel Syndrome. While contemplating for the answers to these questions, I found two interesting articles which are completely different, and yet, similar with its destination goal. The first talks about keeping an active lifestyle, like exercising, to extend life expectancy. Meanwhile, the other article talks about good nutrition being the best anti-aging solution. Amid high food prices in 1972, Sweden's National Board of Health and Welfare developed the idea of "basic foods" that were both cheap and nutritious, and "supplemental foods" that added nutrition missing from the basic foods. Anna Britt Agnsäter, head of the test kitchen at KF, a consumer co-op that worked with the Board, held a lecture the next year on how to illustrate these food groups. Attendee Fjalar Clemes suggested a triangle displaying basic foods at the base. Agnsäter developed the idea into the first food pyramid, which was introduced to the public in 1974 in KF's Vi magazine.[1][2][3] The pyramid was divided into basic foods at the base, including milk, cheese, margarine, bread, cereals and potatoes; a large section of supplemental vegetables and fruit; and an apex of supplemental meat, fish and eggs. The pyramid competed with the National Board's "dietary circle," which KF saw as problematic for resembling a cake divided into seven slices, and for not indicating how much of each food should be eaten. While the Board distanced itself from the pyramid, KF continued to promote it, and food pyramids were developed in other Scandinavian countries, as well as West Germany, Japan and Sri Lanka.
