Nyoongar Seasons
In south west Australia, the nyoongar calendar has six different seasons each year. These seasons in order are Birak, Bunuru, Djeran, Makuru, Djilba, Kambarang. Each of these seasons represents (and explains) the seasonal changes we see every year. These “changes” revolve around flowering of plants, hibernation of reptiles and the moulting of swans, all determining what season it is, and when the seasons are changing.

The Nyoongar seasons can change length, being longer or shorter, and are indicated by the things happening and changing around us, rather than the usually dates calendar we are used to in our modern day

For about as long as anyone’s been writing anything, the seasons have stood for the same set of meanings. Maybe it's hard-wired into us that spring has to do with childhood and youth, summer with adulthood and romance and fulfillment and passion, autumn with decline and middle age and tiredness but also harvest, winter with old age and resentment and death. There are 2 different types of plants in Australia, defined by their different photosynthetic pathways. One uses the C4 pathway and the other C3. The photosynthetic pathways depend firstly on the season of rainfall and on the geographical position i.e. north to south variations. C3 grasses grow best in areas affected by the winter monsoons (southern Australia). Whereas C4 grasses dominate areas that are affected by the summer monsoon (central and northern Australia). The majority of trees and shrubs across Australia are C3 plants. Emu normally lay their eggs in the winter so their preferred diet is C3 plants. The relative abundance of C4 grasses has varied over the past 65,000 years.…
