O Brien's The Things They Carried
Vietnam is a time in our history that will teach you what the soldier’s dealt with on a daily basis and how events affected their health and mental state. In order for a story to be good it must be filled with facts, but with imagery that make a story easier to picture it when reading it.
When an author writes a story they need to use facts to make a good story, but they need to add things to make the readers picture what is happening, they make them think deeper about the story. An example of when this happens in The Things They Carried is when O’Brien is talking about Curt Lemons death, “I can see him turning looking back at Rat Kiley, then he laughed and took that curious half step from the shade into sunlight, his face suddenly brown and shining, and when his foot touched down, in that instant, he must've thought it was the son that was killing him.”(O’Brien 90). The way he describes Lemons death makes you picture it, you see in your head what actually happened to Curt Lemon and you almost feel like it happened to you. If he would have just put facts that Curt stepped on a landmine you would have a hard time picturing this but the ways he explains it really helps you visualize this in your mind and you feel like you actually saw it yourself. time when this happens is when O’Brien talks about how he almost left for Canada “I saw my brother and sister, all the townsfolk, the mayor and the entire Chamber of Commerce and all my old teachers and girlfriends and high school buddies”(O’Brien 60). He didn't actually see these people, but you can picture how hard it was for him to make a decision. Both of these quotes show that when an author writes a story they need to use facts but add other things to help the reader picture what happened. Him explaining all the people brings you to a time in your life when you may have left to go somewhere without your family.

For example if someone wrote a story about a hockey game and just used facts and didn't add any imagery it's hard for the reader to picture it. Instead the writer needs to use facts and add imagery about it like “The swift footed center dazzled the Eagles goalie with several quick dribbles and slipped the puck past him to put Jefferson up 1-0”(Rosengren 13). The quote helps you imagined what
happened.
