Sometimes leaders can get distracted, even the great ones, but it is their job to realize that they made a mistake and must suffer the consequences. Some leaders only lead for the glory. Everett from O Brother Where Art Thou is an amazing leader and his men looked up to him. Although Everett can be considered a good leader, throughout the journey he usually seems to care for his own self. Although the Coen Brothers appear to provide Ulysses with a sense of leadership in O Brother Where Art Thou, in reality they portray him as a selfish, desperate man in order to suggest that a life where one only thinks of themselves will lead to destruction.…
In conclusion, while O Brother, Where Art Thou may have been based on the Odyssey by Homer it is almost completely Americanized. The film by the Coen brothers used the concept of the Odyssey to tell an American epic about the values that American culture holds above all others. The values shown are a part of the journey the trio makes and sometimes with the company of Tommy. By adhering to the values set by the American culture the trio advances toward their final goal, and are admired by those who share their values. In the end of O Brother, Where Art Thou is an American Odyssey with the final lesson of the epic being living a virtuous life will lead you to what you truly…
In the movie twelve angry man, after the twelve jurors listened to the facts in the trail, the judge gives her instructions to them. The judge told them that the man could face the death penalty if he found guilty. The 12 man gather in a stifling hot room to have a concluding about the case. They start arguing and adding their own experience, culture, and understanding of people's motives as a way of reconsidering the facts. Although all the jurors had listened to the same stated facts and they were in the same situation, each one of them interprets the facts differently. This reflects the differences in people and the different ways that we view the same things.…
Soaked, little, and naked is how the viewer finds Susanna in the middle of Girl, Interrupted. Or rather, soaked, little, naked, and hysterical. A state James Mangold utilizes to further illustrate his message. The film serves as a vehicle for Mangold to discuss madness and the society it exists within. Valerie, the asylum’s registered nurse, throws Susanna, the film’s suicidal protagonist, into a tub filled with water in order to snap Susanna out of her depressed state. Susanna lashes out at Valerie with every hurtful vulgarity she has within her. Despite this, Valerie remains calm and collected. In this interaction between Susanna and Valerie, madness is portrayed in its most basic form; it is an ongoing battle between the individual and the environment surrounding it. The individual is a victim of his environment, overwhelmed into regurgitating the detritus surrounding him that are readily filtered and suppressed by those deemed sane by society.…
In Brother Dear by Bernice Friesen, the author suggests that success can come in many forms, but each form is unique to each person. In the excerpt, Greg is leaving the house, with Sharlene following him and trying to convince him to stay at home.…
One of the more noticeable techniques used to evoke feelings and thoughts from the reader are the structure and rhythm that the song evolves. This is clearly visible in the first verse, alike the others, the first line rhymes with the second and the third with the fourth. For example the repletion of the whole end consonant sounds like Sahn and man', turkey and city'. The fifth line of the verse links the song to the next verse. A clear structure and rhythm establishes a clear, strong sound to enforce the meaning of the lyrics being sung.…

Films that claim the statement, “based on a true story” intend to make all of the pictured events as accurate as possible. While depicting a historic moment can be incredible hard, it can be even harder when the original script is constructed upon a lie. Confessions of a Dangerous Mind is a movie based the life of the man responsible for creating a genre of television in which we capitalize on today, but also for creating an autobiography so far- fetched that it appears to be true. Confessions of a Dangerous Mind presents a look into the fabricated double life of Chuck Barris.…
The essay “Does the Internet Make You Smarter?” talks about how the internet has evolved from classic print and how it affects people in today’s society. The author talks about what people have the capability to create using the internet and electronics. The author also talks about the mediocre things that are being published on the internet. Throughout the essay the author talks about the issues that society came upon when the first printing press was created and how it is similar to what we are encountering today. Going along in this essay the author brings up how there are things that get released that can help people of today and there are also things created that aren’t as beneficial to society. He goes on to say that what is created that can benefit us takes much longer for the widespread of it than the time it takes for the widespread of something less important.…
Even though the poem seems rather callous and heartless, the poet is able to make it rather humorous with the Siren claiming that it is only “a bird suit” and “feathery mechanics” [1] rather than her actual half-bird half-woman form. Atwood also uses irony as an underlying theme when the Siren was the actual marauder and the sailor was the one who needed saving. But the most intriguing aspect of this poem is the deceitfulness used by the Siren in how she will reveal the secret of the song when in fact she was already using it.…
Homer dictates,"Come closer, famous Odysseus...Never has any sailor passed our shores...honeyed voices from our lips..." This demonstrates how Homer does not intend on making the Sirens look helpful in the Odyssey, but another obstacle to face. On the other hand, Atwood's poem, the "Siren Song"is written in the view point of a Siren. Atwood dictates, "Shall I tell you the secret...if I do...get me out of...bird suit...don't enjoy it here...with these two feathery maniacs...Help me!" Atwood has given the readers the opportunity to get the view point of a Siren and her role which she is not very appreciative of, which the readers can infer that the Sirens are pitiful creatures to begin…
To create a descriptive representation of when the troops attacked Troy, Homer writes, “troops of Achaeans broke from cover, streaming out of horses hollow flanks to plunder Troy - he sang how left and right they ravaged the steep city.” These two selections from the passage convey an aggressive nature and strength by describing the attack and Troy’s inevitable loss with vivid imagery. In the second paragraph, Homer uses an epic simile to describe the extent of Odysseus’ anguish and heartache by comparing Odysseus’ emotional state as that of a deeply heartbroken woman. Within the epic simile, Homer uses imagery to describe the crying woman. He writes, “her arms flung around her darling husband, a man who fell in battle, fighting for town and townsmen, trying to beat the day of doom from home and children. Seeing the man go down, dying, gasping for breath, she clings for dear life, screams and shrills.” This quote displays deep emotional pain and turmoil, as it portrays an image of a woman grieving a devastating loss. This is quite different from the image created in the first paragraph, they contrast in terms of how they both convey different effects to the reader. One is conveys strength and power, especially that of Odysseus, as he is the one who led the battle. But in the other paragraph, the reader sees that Odysseus is no longer that strong warrior, as he is shown displaying deep pain and…
In Eddie Huang's memoir Fresh Off the Boat, Huang uses humor to convey messages about his life that you could easily be misdirected or seen as weird in other cultures. During the duration of the book he is showing us his struggles of being a first generation Asian American and we see that humor is a gateway to help him through many of the difficult times. For example, Huang in his childhood and adolescence was still learning American cultures and values.…
In analyzing 12 Angry Men the first theory that came to mind is the Universal Theory of Leadership. The theory is defined as the belief that certain personal characteristics and skills contribute to leadership effectiveness in many situations. This shows true with Juror #8. Juror #8 was the architect who emerged as a real effective leader. The architect showed self-confidence and assertiveness. He convinced the jury that once all thought the young man was guilty to believing he was innocent due to the lack of proof and questionable assumptions. He showed himself as respectable, knowledgeable, and authentic. The architect rose question as to whether or not the circumstances could be possible by re-enacting the situation. He challenged the process completely by doing this. He was also a leader of integrity because he was loyal to rational principles, practiced what he preached, and did this regardless of the social pressure from fellow jurors’. With these characteristic traits the architect proves to be an charismatic and effective leader.…
While Edwidge and her brother Bob lived in Haiti with their Aunt and Uncle they would receive a half page, three paragraph letter every other month since Joseph and Denise didn’t have a phone and call centers where too costly. The letter was always addressed to Joseph and the lettered was structured so that “the first paragraph offer(ed) news of his and my mother’s health, the second detailing how to spend the money they had wired for food, lodging and school expense for Bob and myself, the third section concluding abruptly after reassuring us that we’d be hearing from him before long (Brother, I’m Dying page 22)”. Later on in life Edwidge would learn from her father that he wanted to tell her and Bob a lot more than what could be fit onto any piece of paper and small envelope (kakutani). It’s unfortunate but if Mira had made these letters more personal and attached to his children then it would just make the separation harder for both parties in this situation. Sometimes it us just best to leave things unsaid in order to protect both sides of the family from the grief of separation.…
