The text I am working with is a speech written by Barack Obama, from the democratic convention, August 28, 2008. Barack Obama’s father is a black man from Kenya, and his mother is a white woman from Kansas.
The topic is the American promise, and what it contains, because Obama wants to remind the people, that the United States is the country, where anything is possible, as long as you work hard enough for it. As he mentions in the speech “(…) through hard work and sacrifice, each of us can pursue our individual dreams (…)”.
He tries to convince the public about that the American promise that was defined under the Declaration of Independence is what you shall fight for, using pathos because he appeals to our emotions,
when he tells about it is promise he makes to his daughters, when he mentions that his mother believed in him and the American promise, when she said that in the U.S.A her son could achieve whatever he put his mind to. But he also uses a lot of Logos, because he makes it clearly that there has to become some changes in this country.
And she seems to be right, because Obama has come far, and is now president of the most powerful country in the world. I think he uses his live experience to get regular Americans to understand why these things are needed and it is easier to relate when he turns to his own experiences. He believes that it is the spirit of the United States which makes them special, and that the promise is the reason people move to the U.S.A. He wants to make a change, and I think that is why his speech is all about the American promise.
Obama uses many episodes from his own life so that people can relate to him. His speech is well constructed. He starts very soft but then he uses his climaxes to build a strong tone in the speech so that people get a feeling that changes can be done, not only by him but as a whole nation. He convinced me by bringing his own life and experiences to his speech, he makes me feel that United States is something special, and that is the country you should move to if you have a dream.
