2.4.1 Effect of Working Performance among Obesity Nurses
As obesity brings adverse health complications to individual, it also negatively affect the workforce participation and is associated with higher risk of occupational injury (Bogossian et al., 2012). Obesity is found to be associated with decreased workplace productivity, increased absenteeism, increased disability, increased incidence of annual sick leave, increased the use of health care system, and increased risk of back-related injuries. Those injuries mainly due to poor body mechanics resulting from not being able to hold heavy items close to body when lifting (Zapka, Lemon, Magner, & Hale, 2009). The weight status among health care providers has impact on their professional practice. For example, health professionals with normal weight were more likely to be more confident in their own weight management, use preventive strategies and provide general advice to obese or overweight patients, perceive less barriers towards weight management and more negative attitude towards obese individuals (Bogossian et al., 2012). It was found that slim nurses think that they have to manage the impression which related to lack empathy and authentic experience in relation to obesity. However, obesity nurses think that they must manage impressions regarding advices given to patients which they themselves have not taken or they act as poor role models (Brown & Thompson, 2007).
