Obesity in America
Specific Purpose: At the end of my speech, the audience will be able to define obesity in America along with the contributing factors, health risks, and solutions or treatment of obesity.
I. What are the contributing factors of obesity?
a. The most common fact is due to the fact that people are eating more calories than they are burning.
a.i. The CDC refers to this as “energy in balance”- to many calories in, too few calories burned.
b. Lack of exercise and physical activity is another factor leading to being obese.
b.i. The CDC states that it is very important to engage in physical activity daily.
b.ii. The HSPH states globally one in three people get little if any physical …show more content…
HSPH also states that it’s clear the decline in physical activity is a main key contributor to the global obesity epidemic.
c. Genetics do play a role in obesity, but they do not always predict your future health.
c.i. The CDC says in some cases multiple genes may increase one’s susceptibility for obesity and require outside factors; such as abundant food supply.
II. What is the major health risks associated with obesity?
a. The CDC says that research has shown that as your weight levels increase to reach levels referred to as obese the risk for the following conditions increase greatly: coronary heart disease, type 2 diabetes, cancers, hypertension, high cholesterol, stroke, live and gallbladder disease, sleep apnea, respiratory problems, osteoarthritis, and gynecological problems.
a.i. Overweight people are more likely to have high blood pressure and cholesterol.
a.i.1. High blood pressure and cholesterol can lead to major risk factor for heart disease and stroke.
a.i.2. Good news is that losing weight can reduce these chances.
a.ii. Overweight people are more likely to develop type 2 diabetes.
a.ii.1. Most cases of type 2 diabetes are obese.
a.ii.2. You can reduce this risk by losing weight, watching diet and engaging in physical
