The mood is that of jealousy. The people portray this by talking about Janie and disrespect her until she walks into earshot of them then they put a mask with a smile on…
Mariachis often aid in the celebration of the lives of Mexicans. They range from weddings and baptisms to funerals. It is also not uncommon for a man to send the woman of his heart a message. This is called serenata (serenade). Mariachi music is also incorporated into mass, which is the the most sacred ritual of the Roman Catholic Church. The traditional elements of mass are interpreted with customary Spanish instruments and the song Misa Panamericana.…
Love plays a very important role in Hurston's Their Eyes were watching God. Janie spent her days…
In Their Eyes Were Watching God the characters Janie and Nanny have conflicting viewpoints on life and how Janie should live hers. Nanny is an old fashioned woman who grew up in a completely different generation than Janie. She grew up a slave, and she doesn’t really see things in the same way as Janie as a result of that time difference. Janie is an extremely advanced woman, as far as social standards go, for the time that she lives in. She is far more independent than the average woman of that time is and doesn’t want to be held back by anyone, especially a male.…
This morning I attended a weekday mass at All Saints Catholic Church. The church itself is relatively large from what I saw. The exterior had many well-tended trees and bushes, with a sign pointing to the office, and a cross about six feet tall out front by a cement walkway which led to the entrance. The building itself was a taupe color with dark brown roofing and glass doors leading at the entrance. As I walked through the glass doors I was not greeted by anyone, so I followed what everyone else was doing. I noticed a holy water font in front of the doors leading directly to the room of worship. I watched as the casually-dressed Parishioners, all aged at least sixty-five years, and mostly white, middle-class women dipped their fingers into the font and then made the sign of the cross, before entering the worship area.…

To be different is to be unique and to stand by your own judgment. Their Eyes Were Watching God, by Zora Hurston, is a coming of age novel with a heartwarming romance in the 1930s by showing the integrity of the narrator, Janie Crawford whom tells her viewpoint of what it took to find love, by first finding herself. Alike, from Ralph Waldo Emerson’s excerpt Self-Reliance and Henry David Thoreau’s essay Civil Disobedience, these transcendentalist thinkers also believed individuals should be able to trust their selves to make the right decisions in life by following their instincts, and to not abide to society’s obligations. And so, the readers are shown how society was the puppeteer, while Janie was the puppet lost in the…
cycle of mass, traditions and ceremonies. Every person had the ability to be in touch…
For my observation, I went to a usual Catholic Mass at a parish local to me. I analyzed the texts being used, the words being spoken, and the level of involvement of every member present. I focused on the responses of those in attendance during prayer and the homily, a scripturally-based reflection not consisting of doctrinal instruction, spoken by the priest. Additionally, I attended Eucharistic Adoration, a ritual where one sits in front of the consecrated bread, which is believed to be the true presence of Christ, contemplating the Mystery of Christ. I observed the people who entered and left and if the read Catholic literature or wrote.…
Words, one of the world's most powerful weapons; depending on how you use them. The way words are used in speech can effect your life, for the best or the worst. One author in particular who is a specialist in Novelist, Folklorist, and Anthropy had put her knowledge in to writing a novel called Their Eyes Were Watching God, which was written by Zora Neale Hurtson herself. Hurtson based this novel on a belief that most folks are as happy as they make their minds up to be, but the main character in the novel proves that statement to be legit; if you don't change your life then it will never change. One major step in changing your life is speaking up for what you believe in. Throughout the novel we find out the changes Janie goes through to pursue happiness.…
The group consisted of families residing in the area and a handful of Marymount students. There were many families with children that were elementary school aged. As is typical with younger children many were restless and had a hard time actually paying attention to the liturgy. The rest of the assembly also seemed to be restless, and frankly bored. As a whole, this assembly of people failed to make Christ present. This assembly did not make Christ present because during the Mass the atmosphere and attitudes of the people in attendance. It seemed as if the people were there for the routine and were uninspired by the liturgy. Granted, children will have trouble focusing but the older adults and university students have to create an environment in which the presence of Christ is felt. For many Church begins to feel as if it is a routine thing that many of us participate on once a week. In contrast, during the sporting event that I attended, from the very beginning it was clear that everyone was lively and excited. The uninspiring attitudes of the people assembled may attributed to the fact that for some Church has become a boring ritual confined to Sunday morning , while sporting events are seen as prime entertainment for many especially in America. Excitement for Christ needs to start on an individual level. If each person is accountable for making Christ present in their lives, then they will be an encouragement to their…
The mass I went to was very interesting. In this because, upon entering the Sanctuary, there is the Holy Water well, that the faithful dip, their fingers into, and make a cross motion on their forehead. The Holy Water is for the faithful in remembrance of their baptism, and rejects Satan. The faithful answer to several Hail Mary prayers before the start of the service; they prep their hearts and minds for mass. Throughout the service, there was constant standing, sitting, and kneeling while the Priest prepared the sacrament, or the Eucharist, commonly called communion of the last supper. During this ritual, there were members of the congregation that assisted with the body of Christ, and the Blood of Christ, in dispensing them to other members of this parish.…
For my Religious Site Visit I went to a Roman Catholic Mass, at St. Annes church in Hagerstown. I attended the Mass with my Girlfriend as my guide. When we walked in we blessed ourselves with holy water that they had at the entrance to the main chamber of the room. After that we took our seats. The first portion of the service was something my girlfriend said was called “Pray the Rosary”. This was a process were you say a prayer called a Rosary using the aid of a physical Rosary (Cross on a beaded necklace).…
The service involved a variety of people, ranging in age. Those who preside over mass wore white robes. The pastor had, along with his white robe, had a yellow sash. As you enter the church, ushers hand out bulletins and help you find an empty row of seats for your group. As the service beginnings, a group of young boys walked candles and incense up to the altar, and were also a part of the choir. There was also communion, where the people went up to the pastor and were given a wafer and sip of wine. Throughout mass, the pastor led the audience in songs, which were accompanied by the choir, consisting of both young adults and adults. I noticed that most of the audience did not need to use the song sheets, but knew the words by heart. Along with singing, the pastor read sections from the Bible and led prayers. Also, he brought attention to some of the events and articles in the bulletin. There was series of baptisms, in which the parents carried their child up to the pastor as he said a prayer and dipped their faces into water. There was also an altar server who helped the pastor in the baptism and the overall service. Near the end of mass, a donation basket was sent around for people to place donations to the church.…
The celebration begins with a concelebrated mass at the Obando Church around 7:00 am. The mass usually ends after an hour, then followed by the procession of the three saints and then the dancing of the devotees to thebeat of bamboo instruments with the tune of Santa Clara Pinung-Pino. This continues for the duration of the festival, with the image of the particular Patron Saint of the day leading the procession. After the procession, participants will…
