Observation Of Anthonio
Anthonio was observed on October 3rd, 2016. Anthonio, Mrs. Ceja were present, as well as the B.A.T clinical team to conduct a descriptive functional assessment, which consisted of direct observation of behavior and an Antecedent-Behavior-Consequence (ABC) narrative recording in the family home.

Upon arrival, the B.A.T. clinical team greeted Mrs. Ceja at the door. His mother directed the team to the dining table. Mom reported at the beginning of the assessment, that after Tony’s second day back at school for being suspended for five days, he became aggressive towards his teacher. According to Mom, Tony was at a hangnail. The teacher told him to stop or you will you bleed. Tony responded, “No, I need my space” the teacher went to put a bandage

Tony needed several verbal prompts to comply to one and two step instructions. For instance, when asked to do one and two step instructions Tony would use profanity at Mom and or clinical team (i.e. “F*** You”). Tony also use profanity during the egg game he played with the clinical team. Tony was warned once not to use profanity or else the game would be removed. Shortly after then, Tony used profanity and the game was removed. Tony was upset over losing access to the game. Tony went to the bathroom, closed the door, and inside the bathroom he yelled out profanity. For this reason, Tony was reinforced for compliant and appropriate behaviors throughout the assessment. Later Tony, hit his knee on the table, screamed, hit the table, he called the table stupid, cried, and engaged in more profanity. Towards the end of the assessment, Tony asked mom if he could not go to school tomorrow because, he was sick and he kept repeating that he was sick. In addition, Tony engaged in scripting, and hand flapping as he was saying “Yoshi”. At end the clinical team talked to Mom, Tony enaged in excessive laughing, screaming, baby talk, and loud talking to get Mom's attention.
The clinical team concluded the observation and disclosed the A-B-C narrative collected with his mother, as well as some of the behaviors observed. The duration of this observation was approximately one hour and 55

Curtis and Janet went to a different school then Rufus but he still walked them to school then walked himself to school. On his way to school a car followed him very slowly but Rufus kept walking. When he got to school it looked the same on the outside that it always had. Rufus pushed open the doors at Searingtown School and yelled “I’m back!” All of his friends ran over to hug him. He went down to the office to get a tour he thought he didn’t need because he remembered every single solitary thing about this place. While the tour was going on everything going on was a blur. He looked left, right and left again, admiring the changes the school had made. “Wow” he sighed. “Is there a problem Rufus?” the tour guide asked. Rufus answered, “When I was here the wall paint was all chipped, there were broken windows and holes in the walls.” “Oh ok, well that concludes our tour and this door on your right is your first period class.” The tour guide replied. Rufus walked in and sat at an available seat at the back of the class room. He opened his notebook and took notes even though he didn’t understand anything that was going on. By the time 5th period came around it was time for lunch he was starving. All of his friends called him over and asked him to sit with him. Momma didn’t make him a big lunch because they didn’t have that much food in the house and then needed to split it 3 different ways. Allison who used to have a big crush on Rufus sat right next to him. Mitchell and Charlie sat across from him and Christina, Alisha and Sammy sat around them. When the bell rang he went to his locker and when he got to class he looked out the window and saw the same car that followed him to school. The only person he thought of was Simon. The coercive cycle is often cited as negatively reinforcing caregivers to give in to child’s demands. In the coercive cycle, the child misbehaves, the parent offers a command, the child is noncompliant and escalates problem behavior, the parent then offers a harsher command, and the child again escalates the problem behavior. This cycle continues until the parent withdraws the demand at which time the child also withdraws the problem behavior, thus negatively reinforcing the parent. At the Summer Treatment Program, I found myself in a coercive cycle on the very first day. During Art Class, a student bothered his peers and was extremely off task. I instructed him to work on his art project. Next, the student demonstrated out of seat behavior. I asked the student to take his seat. This cycle went on for another 30 minutes where he escalated behavior and I tried to correct it. Exhausted and frustrated, I stopped issuing commands. The student returned to his seat and talked quietly with the peers around him. While he was not working on his art project, this was a major improvement from the behaviors I had seen moments prior. At the end of the day, I debriefed with my supervisor. They educated me on coercive cycles and warned me of the negatively reinforcing properties. Beyond that, they instructed me to do my best to get eventual compliance. Consultants can address the issue of…
