Observation Of The Red Crane
At this event were put in small groups and assigned to an art in which we observe and inspected for about 10 minutes. There were three tables, so each group had their own art piece to inspect. My group had a painting called the Red Crane. For 10 minutes we used our “close reading” skills to observe this art piece. We observed the painting through a grammar, logic, and rhetoric lens. Grammar in visual art might be thought of as the formal elements and composition. Through this we were able to notice that painting was actually made into pieces, which bulged out of the frame. In addition where able to know the contrasting colors between the pieces some piece displayed lush color while other places had dull colors. Another tactic we use was logic. Logic is the way the formal elements come together to create a whole not composition, exactly, but rather how the various elements work together. With this process we asked one another how did each component of this art piecework with the overall picture. Lastly, another term we used was rhetoric. Rhetoric is defined as the backstory, the underlying message, and the tools of persuasion. Using grammar allowed us to question only the visible components of the art pieces such as the texture, the structure, and the colors presented in the piece. Within the group I was able to question why the are piece had various shades of colors from one end to other end. In addition the group I was in where were able to agree to disagree on our views of what the colors represent. In this painting several people believed it represented income inequality but I said it represented prosperity. In the background of the paint existed a red crane. I stated that this red crane demonstrated a city that in the process of building more condos or some type living

    In the graphic essay, the artist gives an example on page 157, that in a raining day, a sad woman went to store for ice cream, then return to her own apartment alone and eat the ice cream by herself. If people only see the picture of this story, they could have a sample idea of what the story about. However if the artist wants these pictures mean something else, he could.     This class experience has enhanced my understanding of the art world and how visuals play a major role in expressing certain ideals. The way certain artists portray their art is caused by many different techniques. It’s amazing to see my progression through out from week to week through my discussion boards. I even learned something the very first week of class, in the Abbott reflection I stated, “A big theme in this photograph is the use of lines. As we have studied in class lines add a lot of meaning and can be used interchangeably. Also, I like how the flag is positioned in the photograph. It is not focused right in the center that allows the eye to absorb so much more information in. The American flag is also scaled larger than a lot of it’s surrounding objects. I like how the light hits the flag differently and allows for two different views, one dark, and one sunny. The stars and stripes give a lot of texture to the flag. For this reason I feel that the message behind this photograph is more focused on America and it’s ideals. I like how the flag shadows on the people. To me it portrays the image of how important our country is and it’s unity.” Rereading my analysis of a simple photograph really shocked me, never would I thought that I was this insightful in art, and just in the first discussion I was talking about contrast, shadows, lines, and meaning.
