Obsession by Jennifer L. Armentrout, New Adult Paranormal Romance compared to, Obsidian (the Lux series) by Jennifer L. Armentrout, Young Adult, fiction, fantasy, romance
Each of us chose two books, one New Adult and one Young Adult book, this way we could compare both books from our own point of views. I read two books by the same author but two books who both were categorized in a different genre, New Adult, and Young Adult. Now, what makes these books so different that they separated them into a different genre?
Jennifer L. Armentrout

self-published while maintaining active contracts with small independent and traditional publishers'. Previously Jennifer L. Armentrout used the pen name J. Lynn for her Adult and New Adult books, however during the Wait For You series, she gave up the name J. Lynn and started using her own name.
Obsession:
Hunter is a ruthless killer. Hunter is also an Alien, an Arum to be precise. The Arum are the dark to the light, they are the shadows you see when it's dark, they are everywhere. And the Department of Defence has him firmly in their grasp, which he usually does not mind cause he gets to kill the bad guys. He usually enjoys his job until now. They gave him the job of protecting a human form his mortal enemy. Serena Cross thought her friend was just blabbing nonsense when she claimed to have seen her boyfriend turning into a light bulb. But then she witnesses her friend's murder, but by what? It could not have been human, it blew up like a like a light bulb. Her friend was killed by the Luxen the mortal enemies of the Arum, wherefore the Arum are the dark the Luxen are the light, but do not get fooled in this story they are anything but light. The Luxen went after Serena's friend because she heard something she shouldn't have, proof that the Luxen are going to invade the Earth. Hunter stirs Serena's temper but also her lust despite their differences. Hunter is arrogant, domineering, and intense, exactly what speaks to Serena. They tease, they play, they fight. Slowly but surely Serena starts to trust Hunter, and Hunter starts to feel more than just lust for Serena. Breaking the rules he has lived by, Hunter is going against the government to keep Serena safe. He will do anything to keep her safe, but is she safe from him?
Obsidian ( Lux series):
Katy has to start over, her mother just decided to pack up and leave after her father died. Katy and her mother moved to West Virginia. Katy had already pretty much resigned herself to thick accents, dodgy internet access, and a whole lot of boring. But it turns out she had pretty cool neighbors or so she thinks. Dee Black the girl next door is Katy's first friend her and she likes her, she is extremely nice, energetic and sweet, but also a little mysterious. But then she meets Dee's brother, Daemon Black, according to Katy he is infuriating, arrogant, stab-worthy and a dickhead. They do not get along even a little bit. Daemon is trying to make his sister see that she shouldn't be hanging out with Katy because according to Daemon she isn't like them. Which is so true, Daemon and Dee are Luxen, aliens from outer space. Daemon and Dee lost their brother Dawson a while back because he fell in love with a human girl and now Daemon is doing his best trying not to repeat history. But then something happens, Daemon saves Katy but doing so he revealed his powers. Now Katy and Daemon share an alien mojo connection, which results in Daemon trying to protect Katy all the time. Always being together might turn out to be safe for Katy but is it actually safe for Daemon, cause Katy cannot stand him and she might kill him.
Comparisons:
Similarities
Both of the books I read were written by the same writer Jennifer L. Armentrout. Both these books also occur in the same world, and the characters of the books actually play a part in the other book. Like Serena and Hunter showing up in the Lux series, and Daemon popping up in Obsession. The storyline of both books plays in with each other because in Obsession they uncover events that are about to happen in the Lux series. Although one book is New Adult and the other is a Young adult book, the romance plays a big part in both books. Both books focus their story on the romance because, without the romance in these books, the events would not have occurred the way they did. A big resemblance is how both Katy and Serena fall in love with a guy they initially hate and could not stand. Throughout the book, both Katy and Serena are confronted with the pasts of Hunter and Daemon, and because of this, you read how they both handle it, in a similar way to both only grow closer to Hunter and Daemon. The biggest resemblance of all is that both books have strong female main characters who you would stereotypically expect to need saving at the beginning of the book like a damsel in distress. However throughout the books, the tables get turned and you realize that both the male main characters are the ones that need the saving, not in a literal way but in an emotional and mental way. At the ending of both books, you realize that these men will both burn down the world to save the woman they love.
Differences
Even though there are comparisons there are also a lot of differences. The biggest of all and the most obvious one is that one is categorized as New Adult and the other as Young Adult. The most obvious reason for separating these books and placing them in different genres is the age differences. Most readers like to feel connected to the main characters and by being the same age as the main characters it makes it easier to imagine yourself in their shoes. The main character in Obsidian is the 17-year-old Katy, which is categorized as the Young Adult book, people assume that the Young Adult readers are all around that age. The main character in Obsession is the 23-year-old Serena, which is categorized as the New Adult book, and here people also assume these readers are around this age. Another difference is how both Katy and Daemon are close to the same age but in Obsession, Serena is at least 6 years younger than Hunter. This shows that the perception is that it is harder for younger readers to understand how someone could fall in love with someone much older than they are. Obsession being a New Adult books is also written in a different way, not having the restriction of the Young Adult genre the writer can actually full write the sex scenes, as how they imagined it in their head, when they are writing a Young Adult book they sometimes have to tone down the language and the steamy, dirty sex scenes. In Obsession, you read small little details, and thoughts you would have never read in a Young Adult book. It is definitely not something you should let a 14 or 15-year-old read. The problems in the book also differ crucially. In Obsidian Katy falls in love for the first time and does not know how to deal with it, she is in her senior year in High School and is worrying about not fitting in and being alone. Whereas in Obsession, Serena is a High School counsellor and she has strong opinions and is an independent woman. She is not worried about what others think and her biggest problems are trying to survive and Katy's problems are mostly problems teenager can relate to like, falling in love for the first time, trying to fit in and have friends and trying to survive high school.
New Adult Why
Obsession is a New Adult book because the book is told from the perspectives of a 23-year-old and a something 30-year-old. Both these ages make for relatable main characters for people between these ages and not for people younger or older. This books had steamy and dirty sex scenes you will not find in any Young Adult books, which is why it is labelled as a New Adult book. There are also references to rape, and throughout the book, the writer did not hesitate to use curse words or dirty words. The thoughts of the main characters are also not suitable for in a Young Adult book. The fact that the main characters also face problems most 20-something people experience makes it easier for the reader to get lost in a different world and absolutely get pulled in by the story and the characters. The most important reason for it being New Adult is the relatability to older characters.
Young Adult Why?
Obsidian is a Young Adult book because the language and the sex scenes are toned down and do not go as far as New Adult language and sex scenes go.
This book is also labelled as Young Adult because the main characters in the book are all around 17 years old which makes it easier for Young Adults, who are around the same age, to relate to the characters. The main characters are faced with teenage problems alongside unrealistic problems, and making the main characters face these teenage problems makes the reader connect with these characters on a higher level. This book deals with the relationship between Katy and her mother, which most reader can relate to on a different level. Katy falling in love for the first time makes it an, even more, of a Young Adult book because that is so stereotypically an adolescence problem that it is obviously something Young Adults can relate to. Throughout the book there are more underlying problems, teenagers deal with, in a way Young Adult books are a reflection of a Young Adults life and for them, it is just a way to escape reality for a while and life in a completely different world. Having the ability to relate to the main character makes it that much easier which is why this book is labelled as Young Adult, be under all the fiction the book deals with problems that teenagers deal with in real life, and it cannot be labelled as New Adult because New Adult tends to deal with issues for people who are a little bit older, like going to …show more content…
