Very few creatures live here because of exceptionally high pressure and nearly freezing environment. No plants can grow here, so all creatures become predators. They survive by consuming bacteria that grows from the materials and hydrogen sulfide given off by underwater cracks in the earth’s crust. This zone consumes 90 percent of the ocean and is completely dark. (Ocean Pollution, 2011) (Surface Area and the Seabed Area, 2010) Pollution in this zone is called anoxic water, which means there is virtually no dissolved oxygen in the water. Oxygen is kept from reaching the deepest levels of the ocean by a physical barrier. This occurs if the rate of oxidation of organic matter by bacteria is superior to the supply of dissolved oxygen. (Anoxic Waters, 2011) Without dissolved oxygen, animals can’t breathe, and they will eventually die from a lack of oxygen. Also, animals might migrate to other zones of the ocean, and become a problem in the food chain. (Ocean of Trouble, 2010)
