Tammy, I enjoyed reading your post. I agree that Sonny’s father was an obstacle in Sonny following his dream to build a rocket. Although Mr. Hickman was resistant in Sonny not following in his steps, he did continue to support him in some ways. Even though Sonny did not become an engineer in the coal mines, I believe Mr. Hickman eventually opened up to the idea of Sonny pursuing his dream.…

Love, loyalty, trustworthiness, friendship, and compassion - all these traits describe what is needed to have a healthy and close relationship If a marriage does not have these qualities then there will be conflict and strife. The American legal system, a direct descendant of the English legal system, began to develop in 1066 and is always evolving. However, the main principles or the “backbone” of this legal system remains the same. The different sources of American law include the Constitution, state constitutions, statutes, common or “case” law, a body of administrative regulations, and court rules. The most important among these various sources of law, other than Constitutional provisions, is common law. The common law process allows judges to hear cases and make decisions, effectively becoming law, based upon these cases. These case decisions become the common law and others must adhere to this “judge-made” law. In the common law process, the judge’s decision or the “holding” of the case binds future courts and creates precedent.…
To avoid going to the mine, of course, Sonny would need to achieve his goals, and in order to do so, he had to teach himself calculus when his school did not allow him to take the class, rocketry and chemistry, so that the rockets would launch, increasing the chances of recognition of the rocket club, but most of all, he needed to learn that, in the words of Wernher von Braun, “If you work hard enough, you will do anything you want,” even escape Coalwood and become a NASA scientist, which is ultimately what Sonny did. Evidently, both Lily and Sonny led by example, becoming the masters of their fates when they were unsatisfied with the lives others had laid out for…

It’s like stepping into a store and not knowing exactly what you are looking for. But once you come across this item, you find yourself not being able to leave until it is in your possession and you know you will have it forever. Kathe Connor from the story June Birthing by Joyce Carol Oates relates to this thought because she comes across a similar issue, but with a whole different meaning. One evening on her way home from work, Kathe discovers a fawn on the side on the road. She wants to save the extremely small newborn animal and along the way she discovers new feelings and a power within herself that she never thought in her wildest dreams she would have. Throughout the story Kathe portrays many different traits, such as her wisdom, her motivation, and the kind heartedness she has for others.…
Sonny got some of his personality from his father. These traits he picked up from his father aren’t so healthy. He was “the apple of his father’s eye.” They both “had-that same privacy” where they would “move back, inside himself, where he can’t be reached.” Their dad was”big and rough and loud-talking, just the opposite of Sonny” but when it came down to one thing “they both had-that same privacy.” Before his father died, Sonny and he never got along. They were always arguing and the “reason that they never hit it off is that they were so much alike.”…
From the narrator’s mother sharing the story about his late uncle, to the devastation from losing their parents, to the amount of care the narrator has toward Sonny’s wellbeing, there is a constant theme of family. After the death of their father, the narrator’s mother tells him, “’You got to hold on to your brother,’ she said, ‘and don’t let him fall, no matter what it looks like is happening to him and no matter how evil you gets with him. You going to be evil with him many a time. But don’t you forget what I told you, you hear?’” (Beiderwell, Wheeler 395). Their mother made it clear to the narrator that he is to look after his brother, which is exactly what he did. Although Sonny ended up in jail and/or rehab, his brother was there for him when he got out, took him into his home, and supported him when he asked him to come what him play the piano in a blues…
The environment that the two brothers grow up in effected their prospective on life. The harsh environment made sonny fell trapped and I believe that the usage of drugs made him forget where he was and fell free. While at the meantime we see his younger brother travel trout the city reminiscing about past event while at the same time worrying about his older brother. Born in 1924 in New York City, James Baldwin grew up I Harlem with some of the same problems that sonny had. Baldwin was born to a young single mother, Emma Jones, at Harlem Hospital.…
