Books 1-4
The Trojan War was the basis for the book The Odyssey.
The Odyssey opens with homer a praying to the muses to guide him to tell this story, and not to leave anything out.
Odysseus is held captive at the island of Ogygia with Calypso. Odysseus can’t leave the island he is trapped at the island.
Odysseus has a hard time returning home because Poseidon is mad at him and is preventing him from getting back because he blinded his son.
Odysseus should expect to find his kingdom in chaos and destruction. The suitors have been using the kingdom for housing, eating his cattle, and the maids for doing all there dirty work. He also should expect his wife possibly in another mans arms.
Penelope hasn’t married someone new because she hasn’t given up hope on Odysseus coming home. She believes Odysseus is still alive and is coming home soon.
Athena tells Telemachus to go in search of his father. If he discovers his father is alive he is to stall for a year. If his father is dead he is to burn his father’s armor on a funeral pyre giving him the honor he deserves he is to also told to find his mother a husband.
Athena appears in disguise as Mentor a family friend so that Telemachus will trust him and tell Athena all his problems.
Nestor and Menelaus have no knowledge about where Odysseus is or if he’s alive, but Telemachus does learn he’s very respected and a very loyal solider. He was brave and courageous.
The suitors plan to kill Telemachus upon his return to prevent him for causing problems.
Odysseus does not speak but he is spoken of. May of the characters see him as a hero and a good man. They all respect him and care about all he does.
In book 5 Hermes goes to tell Calypso she must release Odysseus from her island. The setting changes from Sparta to Calypsos Island. The characters change from Helen, Menelaus, and Telemachus to Odysseus and Calypso.
Calypso’s Island is a beautiful luscious paradise full of birds, fire, flowers, a pungent Cyprus smell, and it feels like spring.
Calypso is a con woman she’s using Odysseus for herself and doesn’t care about him.
When Calypso offers Odysseus immortality he tells Calypso she’s not his wife and he knows that, but he still loves her for who she is. After Odysseus leaves the island Poseidon is still mad at him and destroys his raft calypso gave him and washes him on the shore of Scheria.
When Nausicaa meets Odysseus she is in L-O-V-E love. She thinks this is the man her friend in the dream was telling her about (really Athena just in disguise).
The Phaeacians welcome Odysseus with a banquet and a feast.
Odysseus requests the song about the wooden horse.
When Demodocus sings Odysseus starts to cry because of the story it tells.
Lotus-eaters are people that eat the lotus flower and get addicted to it.
Men who eat it want more and more and don’t want to leave the island. They want to feast off it forever.
Odysseus defeats the Cyclops by stabbing a wooden spike hardened by fire into its eye.
Circe changes Odysseus men into pigs because they are acting like pigs and she can send them into the state they are portraying.
Odysseus and his men stay with her for three years even though they think they’ve been there for two days. She can make it seem like time goes by differently than it actually is.
Odysseus eats an herb called moly to protect him from Circe’s drug then demands to have his men turned back to the human form. Circe tells him he needs to go talk to Tiresias about how to get home.
Odysseus gets the spirits to gather by bringing them blood to drink because that is what they crave most.
Odysseus wants to hear the sirens song so he orders his men to tie him to the mast.

Telemachus sneaks in the back way like his fathers did to avoid being killed by the suitors.
Odysseus finds a bunch of suitors fighting to marry his wife, the suitors living off his land and cattle. He finds his palace a mess.
Odysseus tests the loyalty of his subjects by asking them as the beggar if they would support Odysseus if he came back.
The suitors treated the disguised Odysseus poorly and in response he proceeded to kill all of them as Odysseus.
Eurycleia discovers Odysseus by the scar on his thigh is the same one Odysseus got from boar hunting.
The test of the great bow is a test to see who will marry Penelope. To complete the test you have to string Odysseus bow and shoot an arrow through 12 axe holes.
The only person able to complete this task is the great and powerful Odysseys.
Penelope questions if the man that claims to be her husband is really her husband.
Penelope has to ask him a personal question only they would know.
She asks if he wants the bed moved because it is impossible to move because it’s built around a tree and he tells her that so Odysseus passes the test.
The peace is restored in Ithaca when the suitor’s family wants revenge for Odysseus killing them. The gods have to step in and say it’s enough and the peace is restored.
