The Odyssey
When we first given the assignment after reading the Odyssey I wasn’t sure what I would do, but then the idea came to me. I thought of the idea to make a map of the journey it took Odysseus to get back home to Ithaca from Troy. The project would start at Troy and then there would be a long curvy river connecting Troy to Ithaca. Along the river there would be all the obstacles Odysseus faced in order to go back home to Ithaca. Courtney and I thought that it would be a good idea to use clay for the river and paint the background green to show his journey. We went to Michaels and got all the supplies and then began to work on the project.
Courtney and I went through our notes and decided which events were the most significant. We came up with 14 events. These events included, Paris choosing a goddess, Odysseus acting mental, raveling and unraveling of Penelope’s quilt, the encounter with the Cyclopse, the sack of winds, the land of the dead, the 6-headed dragon and whirlpool, when Odysseus stayed on the island of Cyclipso for 7 years, when Umaes shows hospitality, when the suitors threw a chair at Odysseus, when Penelope set up the archery course, when Odysseus and Telemachus trapped the suitors in the feasting hall, and of course when Penelope and Odysseus fall in love at last. These were the key events in the book that we felt should be included in the project.
After we had chosen the events, we started to do the project. We first made the river out of clay and then painted the background green to represent grass and flowers. When it dried completely we started to make the events. Courtney and I had to decide what we were going to make for each event. This was very difficult because for some of them it was hard to express the event through a picture. However this didn’t stop us and eventually we figured out what we were going to make for all 14 events.
After we finished gluing on all the events we decided we were going to write a little description for each event. We thought this would be a good idea because if people didn’t recognize the picture or drawing they could look at the description and be able to realize what we were trying to explain.
Our goal for the project over all was for people to see the main points in the Odyssey. We wanted people to realize that Odysseus went through many hardships before he reached Ithaca but he never gave up. We showed this by having Odysseus start at Troy and make his way back to Ithaca.
Overall I think Courtney and I did a very nice job explaining our interpretation of the text. I hope you enjoyed it too. ☺

The gods have played their part altering the course of the hero’s voyage. Seemingly, in the epic harmony does not last long and challenges follow Odysseus like a plague. Calypso, the audience believes holds the last installment of the global journey, our hero has yet more battles ahead of him. In fact, the king of Ithaca wandered the Mediterranean and its coastal lands for 10 years before finally arriving home. As waves crash against the raft, “he was seen sailing the ocean”(284). The sea near the land of the Phaeacians is only one region Odysseus has been driven to. Odysseus, the hero of The Odyssey, has found himself in many interesting, as well as dangerous, predicaments. Although these predicaments were extremely challenging, Odysseus always found a way to survive. His survival depended on his mind and body combined. Without this important balance of thought and strength, it is obvious that Odysseus would not have made it home safely, or he may have not even made it home at all. Throughout The Odyssey, by Homer, Odysseus showed amazing personal qualities that enabled him to survive his adventures.…

Of all the events in Homer’s Odyssey (Dover 1999), the most significant event is the manner in which Odysseus carries out his retribution of the maids and suitors. Odysseus disguises himself and lies to everyone he cares about to see who is loyal to him and who is not. He tests the qualities of others, all the while showing none of them himself. His untrustworthy behavior makes him hypocritical when it comes to proving others loyalty. Odysseus is not justified in his retribution of the maids and the suitors because of his ignobility.…

Penelope’s cunningness, and loyalty in the epic depicts her as an ideal woman, showcasing her crucial role as a motivational guide for Odysseus and his journey back home. Starting with Penelope’s intelligence and cleverness. Penelope’s cunningness and intelligence is shown throughout the situation with her suitors. Penelope is shown to be contsently in emotional termilol over odyessus throughout the Odyssey. For much of the book she is seen to be crying until a god take pity on her and allows her to fall asleep. But while Penelope is seen to be very leaky, she is also shown to be very rational, and very bounded to many things. One of this things is the funeral shroud that she uses to trick the suitors for three years by unraveling it at night. This was a very interseting part, because in some way it reence backs to Zues putting a viel on chaos and giving it form. Rather in this intsence the viel is a shroud, Penople is Zeus, and the chaos she is bounding is her solution to keep her husbands home without remarrying, or having to give it up, and to move back in with her parents. Penelope is and intersecting character because she mirrors Zeus first wife in many ways, such as tricking her suitors for three years, and by rational finding out that is Odysseus was the true Odysseus, and not and…
