First in the beginning it said that Odysseus was thrown out of the ship that just tells you that something is going on there is something that someone wanted to do because if they wanted to throw the king overboard. To add to this point the wooers knew that the handmaidens were loyal to Odysseus so the wooers had the handmaidens hung for treason against them. This explain how his action were justified because the wooers wanted to get rid of evidence.
Finally when the wooers found out that there job wasn't done they tried to cover it up by saying that the gods are pulling tricks on you and when they could keep a grasp on the people they still had who still had loyalty with Odysseus they were planning on killing them so they could have the ultimate coverup kill Penelope, kill Telemuches, and finally kill Odysseus. The only way that they were going to be able to kill these people is kill them on the holy holiday that is really only holy to Apollo the god of the sun.
