Odysseus As A Hero Essay

In the Odyssey, we are introduced to odysseus as a battle hero. Nowadays when you hear of a soldier or general, most people think of a hard muscley guy that shows little feelings. That is accurate to who odysseus was right after the long battle of Troy. What changed him from that to a wise more caring and clever man was the journey home and the obstacles it contained. In the beginning of his journey home Odysseus and his men were very head strong as they landed on ismarus/ismara, which was on the coast of Thrace. They decided to raid the city and try to gain as much goods as they could. After the win they just had they didn't think twice about the Ciconians trying to engage them in a battle. And they head off on their journey with Odysseus. They pass the sirens without losing anyone by Odysseus’ clever idea to use earplugs and to tie him up. At this point Odysseus has already changed a lot and has become a better leader. After the sirens, Odysseus had to decide between Scylla or Charybdis to swim closer to. He thinks through this decision and instead of risking losing his whole ship and men again, he goes towards scylla and losing six men, one for each hydra head. There was a high risk of losing men either way but he thought hard and chose the better route. From this point on in the journey Odysseus learned all of the skills from the past events. He learned to think about consequences, To stand up and take charge, He has to be vigilant and never be distracted or careless,and to keep priorities straight and think through decisions before making them. It’s easy to see that from each obstacle he faced he learned and changed. Until he was a better leader than he was before. Not too headstrong but not to slow. He had to make good decisions. And it was those skills that got him home and gained his wife and son back, and become a better king for his
