Odysseus Is A Hero
When people hear the word “hero”, they usually think one who has superpower. Not always. Usually people know heroes from reading books or watching movies. I read a literary history “Homer and the Odysseus”, which is an amazing epic story that can give you some inspirations for your life. The character “Odysseus” is a hero in the story who isn't a god but a human-being. He is a brave, wise, noble, responsible, loyal, and tough man.
In the story,Odysseus was the Greek king of the country “Ithaca”. He and his men defeated the Trojan, and the war took ten years. After the Trojan war, he brought his men to a long voyage to go back home by a ship. When they arrived to an island, they looked for foods and met Lotus Easter who offered Odysseus and his

The sentence in the story said that “Lotus Eaters who showed no will to do us harm, only offering the sweet Lotus to our friends --but those who ate this honeyed plant, the Lotus, never cared to report, nor to return: they longed to stay forgetful of their homeland”. Even though Lotus Eater was dangerous, Odysseus still went to save his men which shows Odysseus is a responsible and loyal man.

After that Odysseus and his men arrived to the next island where Cyclops the son of
Poseidon lived. Odysseus and his men discovered a cave which was the home of Cyclops.
Cyclops captured Odysseus and his men and wanted to eat them. When they were grasped in
Cyclops’s hand, Odysseus figured out a solution. He told Cyclops that wines were delicious drinks, and tempted him to find it on the ship. In that case, they could have more time to figure out how to run away from the cave. They tried everything and still couldn’t find a way to escape.
When Cyclops came back, he opened the cave and saw the goats coming out from the cave, but didn’t see Odysseus and his men. Because they hid under the body of goats. When Cyclops realized what had happened, he was very angry and attacked Odysseus and his men.

Odysseus did not want to do anything to the Cyclops because he knew that he was the only one with the strength to move the giant stone. So the next morning he came up with a plan to stab the cyclops in the eye with a wooden stake, when he went to sleep odysseus heated up the stake and jabbed it into the cyclops’s eye. Now since the cyclops could not see the men grabbed onto some sheep and the cyclops lead them out of his cave without thinking anything of it. This event from the Odyssey is similar to what would happen in a real life situation if a soldier were to get captured. Odysseus represents the soldier and Polyphemus represents the enemies that have captured the soldier. This is a scary but very real thing that happens to many soldiers fighting in enemy territory, you venture into an unknown area seeking shelter when suddenly you run into the leader of the enemy force…

A hero is somwone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself- Joesph Campbell. Odysseus is an an optimal hero in both the physical and metal sense. In the physical sense he is a tremendus hero, because he was challenged to all these extreme dangourous adventures; he umexpectly walks out alive after questioning for ten years long and facing the most extraordinarily dangerous creatures and people. Why would Homer set up this whole exciting experience with all the strange comings that Odysseus has to go through, if this was not to show that this stong and intelligent man is a great hero of the Greek world? What will a strong itelligent hero of greek times look like?…

This caused the men not to be overpowered by the Sirens. Odysseus gave up his own safety to save his men's lives, showing a courageous act. Another example is, when odysseus and his men were trapped by the Cyclops, he devised a plan to free himself and the men. Odysseus put the plan into action because he, “... leaned on it [the spear] turning it as a shipwright turns a drill in planking,” blinding the Cyclops(316-318). Odysseus came up with this because he did not want to kill him, or his men would never escape. Therefore, his plan was to blind the cyclops by stabbing him in the eye. This effected the rest of the journey because again, he saved his men from death. Finally, he is courageous when he goes to kill the suitors for his wife. After he reveals himself to the suitors, Odysseus starts shooting arrows to kill them. Then he says to Telemachus, “when they are all gone if I’m alone, they can…
